Well, hello fair folk of The Elmwood!!

Let me throw an introduction out right here, you might know me as xLupoldx or Dellamorta or Ginger Snapzyerneck or The Monkey or “Sweet Christmas not her again” or if you are super unfortunate, you know me by my real world and often mispronounced AND spelled name, Chani. I want to thank both the good Lady J and my homegirl for life, Lady Cynara for rattling my cage and getting me back on the site for this big shake up and reboot. It's been a while and it feels ruddy fantastic to be writing once more.

In the well aimed poke that brought me back, the question was raised if I would be interested in running other games, not just for the sake of variety for the site (because there is nothing more glorious than having a cornucopia of games to choose and throw yourself into, of course!), but also so our fearless leaders, the good Lady J and Maxx, could have a chance to just PLAY, rather than always being the folks that are running the show. I was told a couple of my previous games had been mentioned and the genres they fall into are currently without places to play. (Both Anita Blake and Bloodlines fall heavily in the Gothic section) So, what follows are some ideas I have kicking around in my noodle, that I am willing to get going. Comment in this thread if there is anything that tickles your fancy and your muse and if we can get enough folks interested, I could be persuaded to run one or maybe even possibly a couple of them.

Also, I would really like everyone to give Wolfinsummer a big, old Elmwood patented warm welcome. This devilishly handsome fella is my beloved and I managed to bully him into joining up, with very little arm twisting and whining!!

So, without further ado, let’s take a good look at the ideas percolating in my noggin!!

Fables Inspired Tale

Hands up if you have ever read Fables? Yeah? Awesome, then you already know what comes next. No? That’s cool too, because this is not going to be exactly like it, anyway.

Have you ever wanted to play out a modern take on characters from fair tales and classic children’s literature? Did you think the Big Bad Wolf got a raw deal and wanted to see a redemption arc for him where he got to explain his motives and romance an adult Little Red Riding Hood? Maybe you wanted to see Snow White, Sleeping, Beauty or Cinderella cast off their co-depency of some random Prince that just happened to be in the right place at the right time? Or maybe, the idea putting the spotlight of a lesser appreciated creature from your favourite children’s book has been something that has been running through your head since you were that kid? This could be the game that satisfies that urge.

In this game, we will see those childhood characters ripped from their settings and dropped into a modern world that seems to have been created just to house them. Everyone has a memory of their story: from their “Once upon a time,” right up until til their “Happily ever after”, but here...life is unknown. The city and its surrounding areas seem idyllic, but there seems to be something that is keeping them there, no one has been able to leave and return to their story. Some have taken this as an opportunity to reimagine themselves and become who they could never have been in the pages of their books. Others are desperately homesick for the familiarity and routine of the story that never changes.  Why are these characters of childhood here and who have they become now that they have no script to follow?

Teen Superhero Team

When Lady J hit me up, she told me that one of the things folks she had been speaking to had voiced a hankering for was a superheroes game. I have run two previous games in this genre and being the big comic book dork that I am, I immediately began wracking my noodle for ideas. This time, I want to do something a little different, and by a little different, I mean a whole heck of a lot different.

Over the past few years we have had some great superhero TV shows, that have really been overshadowed by the big blockbuster movies. In the few months alone I have binged three great shows and one...not so great, but all of these have smushed together to give me plot bunnies. In no particular order, the source of my notion has been in thanks to: Watchmen (TV show, not, and I cannot stress this enough, NOT  the movie), The Boys, Doom Patrol, Titans (which I thought was trash, sadly), Young Justice, and just to upset the applecart, the trailer (and all the buzz online) for The New Mutants.

The idea is that you would be playing a member of a fledgling Teen Team. The adult heroes and their teams are high profile celebrities and with that comes lucrative product placement, sponsorship deals and one hell of a PR machine to make sure those dollars keep coming in. Everything they do is broadcasted for public consumption and big business loves having superheroes as their brand ambassadors.

...but this means the adult’s hands are tied by where, when and who they can help. Your team is beginning to see the cracks in the friendly neighbourhood hero facade and already the pressure to do the right thing by the people that could fund you a fortune is on your shoulders. There are real people with real emergencies out there, but are they impactful or important enough to save? Are you willing to put aside fortune and glory to actually help the little people, the undesirables and the unwanted? Are you willing to expose the corruption of the heroes and the world to actually be a “real” hero?

BPRD: Tabloid Investigation Unit

For those who are not familiar with the acronym, BPRD stands for The Bureau of Paranormal Research and Defence. (it's also the home of my favourite guy, Hellboy. Seriously, I love him, deeply and truly.) If you haven’t read a Hellboy comic or book, seen a Hellboy movie (there’s three of them, and all of them are precious...I will fight you) or read any of the BPRD comics, then let me give you a little peek into what it's all about.  In a nutshell, the BPRD is a secret intelligence agency that was founded by the United States and United Kingdom governments to research the occult, paranormal and supernatural, and defend the world against the dangers those things can cause. The folks that are employed by the BPRD all have unique skills and/or are some of the very best in their field, and are usually split into two distinct types that work together in mixed teams: the Special Talents Taskforce ( like Hellboy, Abe Sapien, and the lovely Roger the Homunculus) and human agents (your crack professionals that have come up from other agencies, such as the FBI, CIA or SAS)

In this game, I have created a new department, within the BPRD,  The Tabloid Investigation Unit.  The media is full of outlandish and crazy stories about aliens, cryptids, creatures from another dimension, beings from beyond the grave, monsters and celestial bodies. Most of these stories are trash, made up for fun and profit, but buried in that garbage journalism are truths. Truths that need a special unit to investigate and maybe even neutralise.

You, the player would be part of this team. You can be part of the Special Talents Taskforce or a human agent. Were you a infernal beast summon from the depths of hell, but found you kind liked living on earth? Are you, yourself a cryptid and just want to make sure the rest of your kind is kept safe from over-curious humans? Maybe you’re an unusually gifted human that can control fire? Or maybe you are a brilliant doctor with an open mind and a knack for healing humans and those who are not so human? No matter where you came from, what you look like or who you are, you are BPRD and when things go bump in the night, you bump back.

Pacific Rim/Cthulhutech/Godzilla/Neon Genesis Evangelion

I was going to make a whole Sir Mixalot reference here about big Kaiju, but then I got distracted by actual butts, which lead me to start thinking about Godzilla with a juicy booty and how that would work with his king-sized tail, and like...would that glow too as he was charging up his atomic breath?

Anyway…

Do you love giant monsters, also known as kaiju? Do you love giant robots piloted by squishy humans to fight giant monsters? Would you love giant cyborg monsters created by mad scientist types to be piloted by those same squishy humans to fight other giant monsters? If that is a “HELL YES!!!” I am hearing, then we are on the same page.

This game would be set either in near future setting or alternative universe, where giant monsters from beyond (not giving any spoilers here) roam the earth and cause merry havoc. You the player would be part of an international military coalition that has been formed as a task force against these marauding monsters. Two units within this Coalition work together on the frontline in brutal combat: Mech and Engels.

So which are you? The naturally gifted pilot that has the skills and talent to operate colossal robots the size of buildings? Or, the naturally gifted pilot that was crazy enough to allow scientists to implant a device in their brain to control giant, armor-encased monstrosities outfitted with terrible arcanotech weapons?

Modern/Post Apocalyptic Fantasy

About a million moons ago, I pitched an idea for a fantasy game. I did a tonne of work on the setting, with about a quadrillion different races that went fairly into depth into their origins and natures. I had this whole world to offer then...life imploded, don’t you love it when that happens?! I now no longer have access to that source material, but most of it still lives on in the depths of my thinker.

The setting is a planet Earth after a great cataclysm that forever changed the entire planet. The Old Gods awoke to find their world infested with humans and magic subjugated to the point of extinction. With great fury, they reset the planet back to how they intended it to be, destroying human based technology to obsoletion. Magic and the creatures born of magic now thrive in a new world that has been reclaimed by nature. Human cities are ancient ruins, the new cities are organic, living things that adapt and influence their inhabitants. Technology still very much exists, but instead of relying on circuitry and  science, it flourishes with magic and natural elements. Humans managed to dodge extinguishing with their uncanny knack of evolution and those that had a natural attunement for magic carried on the species line.

This game would be like a bizarre hybrid of Blade Runner and Lord of the Rings...I’m not sure if that makes it sound great or terrible. Not quite Shadowrun or Starfinder, it’s all earth and magic based. I have a few ideas on plots, all depending on the crew that assembled. If you’re interested, just ask me more. It really is that easy!

First of all, welcome back!  It is good to see the old names cropping up again.  After almost ten years of trying to keep this old girl alive, having Jallyn reach out and pull so many old members back is something that makes me smile for a lot of reasons.

Secondly, I definitely want to welcome Wolfinsummer.  If he makes you smile, that's a good thing.  If he adds new blood to the Elmwood, that's a good thing.  If he enjoys doing both, that's a great thing.  Hello and welcome Wolfinsummer.  I hope you enjoy your journey and you find what you are looking for in our halls.

Fables Inspired Tale - for inspiration, check out the Fables comic books or the video game play-through.  There is huge potential here.

Teen Superhero Team - an incredible premise and I would like to add Powers a Playstation series to the list of potential inspirations.  Eddy Izzard can be a scary bad-ass when he wants to be.

BPRD: Tabloid Investigation Unit - around here, we call that Department 7.  It too ground to a halt when Jallyn dropped out of writing but it can be revived as or replaced with something fresh and new.

Pacific Rim/Cthulhutech/Godzilla/Neon Genesis Evangelion - I have a weakness for giant fighting robots.  I also have too much on my plate already, you fiendish monkey.

Modern/Post Apocalyptic Fantasy - seem to recall this one.  I was playing a faerie drag queen who ran a nail salon.  They were a tooth faerie offshoot who ate nail clippings instead of teeth, which made them the equivalent of a vegan.  I was sure the thread was around here somewhere, although it didn't really get off the ground so it might have been cleared out to make space.  I just checked.  Terra Aether was indeed deleted.

Anyway, welcome back!

Aaaaah, Maxx!! Thank you, lovely!! It's certainly been a journey, hasn't it? I am also excited to bring my beloved on board, he is an incredible DM, so being able to give him a place to play is kind of a big deal.

Okay, let me reply to your comments and ideas in chronological order, because if I don't I will implode, and that is messy!!!

Fables Inspired Tale: Yes, exactly. Just like I mentioned in the teaser (and the title too, of course) This idea was inspired by Bill Willingham's comic book Opus, Fables. He also did a few splinters from that including 1001 Snowfall Nights (Arabian Nights flavoured), Fairest (focused on the female Fables, such as Sleeping Beauty, Cinderella and Rapunzel) and Jack of Fables (focusing on Jack Horner) The Fables point and click adventure game, "The Wolf Among Us", if absolutely wonderful and still available on Steam for about twenty bucks. I highly recommend it, as I would all Telltale games (rip)

What differentiates this notion from is inspiration source, that it also have elements of Lost, The Prisoner and The Good Place. The folks here are not refugees from their homeland (like in Fables), rather they have inexplicably found themselves in this idyllic, Utopian place, where they are free to live out their lives as they please...I will say no more, because I know why they are there, how they got they and why they cannot find a way to leave. PLOT!!!!

Teen Supehero Team: Not seen powers,  but I have read a chunk of the comics. It could be considered in there too for a possible inspiration. There are a couple of quirks I am going to throw into the mix to change up gameplay and the focus on it being a teen team is really important...which again, PLOT!!

BPRD: Tabloid Investigation Unit: Yeeeeeeeah, in a similar vein to Department 7, but also a completely different beast. The key plot point in this is that their cases are literally scoured from the pages of wacky, over the top tabloids, be they in print or the interweb. Will they be investigating the woman who claims she is carrying Big Foot’s lovechild? They very well could be. Will they be  taking a look into the claims of a diner waitress that Elivs is alive and well and is actually an alien? That is definitely in their wheelhouse. Will they be rushing off Wyoming to track down a herd of carnivorous Jackalopes that are devouring everything in their path? You’re darn tooting they will.

The things that will come up in this game will be based around modern fairytales, cryptozoology and urban myths. Department 7 was very much within the “World of Darkness”, which this is not (it will be an actual department of the BPRD) and players will be encouraged to look more to said fairy tales, folklore and cryptids to choose their characters from. Also, super skilled humans!!!

Pacific Rim/Cthulhutech/Godzilla/Neon Genesis Evangelion: Muah ha ha ha ha!! Yaaaassssss, such beautiful glittering giant robots with fabulous artillery and the things with which you battle the monsters of monstrous size!!! Have a snifty at Cthulhutech, you can peruse PDFs of it on The Trove for zero dollars...it's delicious!!

Modern/Post Apocalyptic Fantasy: Yes!!! The one and the same! Sadly all the work I did on it is now gone, but I still have a great deal of it rattling around my noodle. It's a great deal more honed in there and there is no way in hell I will be offered as many races this time. Think like...Blade Runner meets the Dark Crystal...yeah that weird.

Fables Inspired Tale: Damn you for catching my attention with this.....

Teen Supehero Team: I ran a superhero high school game on another site that you are familair with.  I can give you something like 80 NPCs to borrow/steal/redress.  But you can't have Adam Caine aka Protean, the shapeshifter.  He can turn into any mammal but cannot keep the shape for more than an hour and needs a five minute break between changes.  He has problems with perfumes and loud noises in human form.  Not that I'm pitching a character or anything....

BPRD: Tabloid Investigation Unit: I miss the World Weekly News....

Pacific Rim/Cthulhutech/Godzilla/Neon Genesis Evangelion: If only we could retreive the spear of Longinus from orbit....

Modern/Post Apocalyptic Fantasy: Why is the only one I had a character already made for the one I find easiest to resist?  Probably because I like making characters more than I like playing them.  Either that or this one is last on the list and I ran out of enthusiasm on the last one.

Looking forward to seeing what you lay down as well as your snuggle bunny....

Fables Inspired Tale: Kinda sounds a bit like one upon a time but I kinda dig the concept. of playing a fairy tale style  :)

BPRD: Definitely hell bow meats glow meets Department 7 vibes I like this idea A Lot this is likely my top vote. Will we be playing weirdos or straight humans cause we arent top brass and good enough to be on hellboys team?

Teen Supehero Team: I do like a good super hero story this one sounds like its a cross between the Boys meets Powers.  So likely dark and gritty and in your face with lots of moral issues. Im not a huge fan of teen drama myself preferring to  play slightly older over underage teens, since they can be are ijgits  but also a cool thread Idea that I can see some folks getting into and finding interesting.

The Mech Kaiju Cthulhu theme isnt really my jam but im sure there are others out there that would love this concept?

Modern/Post Apocalyptic Fantasy SOunds intriguing also. Any of these ones I highlighted I would have interest in seeing where you went with them.

If I had to pick two from the list it would be the first two choices I posted Fables  and BRPD

Chani!! So happy to have you back love! *Glomp*
Also, welcome to the madness Wolfinsummer, I have a feeling you'll fit right in.

On to the purpose of the thread....

Fables Inspired Tale: Sounds a lot like Once Upon a Time, which I really liked (other than the final season) and sounds intriguing.

Teen Supehero Team: Always love me a good magical/super powered teen story.

BPRD: Not really my jam.

Pacific Rim/Cthulhutech/Godzilla/Neon Genesis Evangelion: Also not really my jam.

Modern/Post Apocalyptic Fantasy: Again, sounds interesting.

So there are three that pique my interest. I would have to sit down and think on it and see if any specific characters for any of them pop up in my head or not before commiting to join any.
Those that think the sky is the limit, will never reach the stars.

Hello my input though again I have stressed unfortunately at this time I dont want to over spread myself to thin and fail commitments to threads so I'm a bit concerned about joining others. But I digress if I have a say it be the following.

WELCOME THE FUCK BACK EVERYONE!!!!! and New comers too cuz ya this has been fun so far even a bit nervous to start that first post up but I'm very happy to have this as an outlet once more.

okay carrying on

Fables- I thought once upon a time as soon as I read the description but then WHAMO BAMO you threw in the wolf amoung us which takes once upon a time and makes it dark and gritty and ooooh so extra awesome. If you cant tell im a sucker well was a sucker for the telltale games. This concept has me intrigued to say the least.

Teen superhero - sorry not my thing

BPRD- Never read anything hellboy but I did most enjoy the movies Im not sure if its because of hellboy universe persay or Doug Jones whom by far is one of the THEE best character actors out there... Ya I said it fight me! So color me tickled at this idea

Pacfic Rim- Not my thing closest this has ever been to my thing was Escaflowne wow how I show my age right lol

Modern/post apocalyptic - Sooo I'm reading the description and its reminding me a lot of uhh shit whats it called ummm the Shinara chronicles.... Is that right?

Hey folks, thanks so much for showing interest! My cold, black, little heart is simply all a flutter from the enthusiasm my ideas have generated. I am keeping a tally to see what is piquing the most interest, in hopes that I can narrow it down to a single game to begin with. I really appreciate the input and questions, so I will do my best to consider said input and answer your questions, especially if it means helping you decide which of these games you would like to play! So, since I am a compulsively methodical creature, let me go on to answer the questions raised in colour coded list form!

Fables Inspired: 4 votes

All of your good folks are completely picking up what I am putting down here. Once Upon a Time, could certainly be used as inspiration, but obviously with some big differences. The big angle with this story would be that they are in an environment that seems perfect, there is no way out of the environment (or choice to come in), all they know of their lives before being in the environment is exactly what happened in the stories (so this means there is no real cross over of the stories before they ended up in this mysterious utopia) and that it is all these storybook character and only these storybook characters

Teen Superhero Team: 2 votes

All the comparisons of the atmosphere/feeling I am trying to create with this game are completely bang on. Noir-sh, darker and gritty, with possibly a little satire and mirroring of today’s conspiracy laden world thrown in to the mix. Thanks humans!!!

Maxx: I certainly do remember that game!! I had a teacher in it, because I wanted to get down and nasty in a very adult way...and I did!! I really appreciate the offer of your cast of NPCs, if his is something that is voted for by our lovely site members, I might just take you up on that! Just as a clarification (I’m sure you knew anyway) this is most definitely not going to be in a school.

Lady Jallyn: I totally get where you are coming from on playing teens. The heroes in this game would be no younger than sixteen and going all the way up to no older than twenty-five. This team would be the “up and comers”, folks who are still kind of green to the whole superhero thing, the younger people who have less experience on their side, but great potential...the folks who are still bright and full of hope for saving the world with their powers. The team that may have one catch all sponsor or investor, but the individuals are big or hard hitting enough to have individual big money sponsorships or merchandise deals. This team doesn;t get the high profile cases and is only just getting noticed in the media, especially as individuals. And besides, half the fun of RP is making idjit choices that we would never make in real life!!
Cynara: Get it guuuuuuuuuurl!!!

BPRD: Tabloid Investigation Unit: 3 votes

Maxx: The Weekly World News is still available online in all its crazy glory, its beautiful

Jallyn: Yeah, your triple combo comparison is quite accurate. The choice of playing weirdos or humans is entirely down to the player, both are available! Bear in mind we will need some characters that can be that party face to deal with the out in the wild normal humans, so if your weirdo can present as a garden variety human, that is a bonus...if not, then they will not be dealing one on one with public witnesses and their roles will be more research and meeting other weirdos based. The folks on this unit  aren’t on Hellboy’s team  not because they aren’t good enough, but because...well for a bunch of reasons. Hellboy’s team are frontline, they are the team you send in when shit has gotten real. They are sent in when things need to be fought or put in their place, which can sometimes mean putting them in the ground. They are like the high profile “Oh shit, everything has exploded and it’s about to get entirely out of hand” The Tabloid Investigation Unit is more low key. They do more research, digging up to see if claims that are being made are true and once it is discovered, they are either trying to keep it under wraps or quietly terminating the problem before it gets big enough to call in Hellboy’s team. Sure, there may be folks in this unit that have aspirations to make it Hellboy’s team, there might even be folks who have scaled back for an “easier gig”  or even been demoted. Generally, its just a different unit within the same organisation.

Krystal: I will not fight you.Doug Jones is not one of the best character actors out there, but the actualnumber one,  best character actor, he is also a treasure and should be protected.

Pacific Rim/Cthulhutech/Godzilla/Neon Genesis Evangelion: 1 vote

Maxx: ..don't even think about trying to breach my A.T field.

Krystal: For sure Escaflowne, could certainly be used as inspiration, because any mecha is great mecha. You also will never be as old as Maxx, because he is older than time itself, so don’t feel bad about getting older.

Modern Post Apocalyptic/Fantasy: 4 votes

Maxx: Yep, you were the only one that submitted a character, that kinda put the old kibosh on the whole thing. If I remember correctly, he was a pixie, which I had set as being the creatures that were most commonly known as tooth fairies. In this setting pixies are detrivores, so they live off of other creatures organic debris….bones, hair, teeth, toenails, fingernails….yum.

Krystal: Never heard of The Shannara Chronicles before you mentioned it. I had a little looky-loo at some trailers and kind, sorta not really. Think more like Netflix’s Bright….but the world is more organic. Like if we were to take a trip there, we would be on par for technology with a few differences in there being more advanced. Everything is made from organic, naturally occurring things, but still modern, so your skyscrapers downtown are actually tress or giant crystal formations, your cell phone doesn’t have a battery and wi-fi it runs on magic and crystals, you favourite bar is a troll bar that plays great music, but don’t go on Fridays because that when the goblins take over and their karaoke  will literally make your poor human body shit yourself.

Again, thanks so much folks!! If you have any, please make sure to keep those questions coming. I have two other players that have promised me (you know who you are, guys!!) that they will play whatever I end up running, so hopefully we can have something soon!! Cheers, folks!

Ah! A wild Chani and her marvelous brain! Everything that comes out of it is remarkable!

I feel like we are being offered a dessert buffet and I want to just say "Yes."

But I shall cast a vote towards Fables, as that is my favourite of the concepts thus far! But also I would not grouse about being out voted on any of these cause they all sound like a good time!

I would have to say that my top two picks would have to be...

BPRD: Tabloid Investigation Unit...When I read the description the first time I had a Tommy Lee Jones/Men in Black moment.

And the other would have to be...

Modern Post Apocalyptic/Fantasy...I'm just a sucker for these things, if my devouring the Hunger Games series was any clue...granted not fantasy by a long shot but definitely post apocalyptic.

Sorry late to the party it's been rough lately.

Totally digging the fables thing. Love that type of story. Go read the princess series by Jim c Hines. First book is the stepsister scheme. I think you will love them.

Tabloid investigation isn't a home run for me. I guess it would depend on how it gets moving.

I am sadly burnt out on superheroes atm. I admin an X-Men site that is... So boring.

Pacific rim. Great movie, not something I would want to play. The hubby likes MechWarrior, not me lol.

The fantasy one sounds kinda fun too.

My lovely lovelies!! I am so thrilled to see more folks throwing their votes into the online proverbial hat!

GRIMOIRE!!! Sweet, wonderful human! I am positively thrilled to see you here. I would be exceedingly honoured to have you be part of whatever I run. Its incredible to think how long we have been treading these boards and the old halls of an AU Hogwarts together. EXCITE!

Wyn, I have never had the pleasure of playing with you directly, but I have been enjoying your cat and rat in the ole AB since you began. I am really excited to connect with you and have you be a part of one of my worlds!

Darkflame, sweet, wonderful, talented and all round good (but still gothy and spooky, of course), Darkflame! You are not late to the party at all, in fact, you are right on time! You've brought some of the best and well realised characters on this site and I am really enthused to see what you will bring to one of these creations.

So, let's take a look at them numbers and see where we are, yeah?

Why not run both make em slow moving threads so they only need love and to be posted in 2-4 times a week. That isn't a super bad commitment :)

But if I need to pick one since I voted for the fables and the future apocalyptic fantasy.I would have to vote for the BRPD one.

Not that votes from management count but if required to pick one, I too would go for Fables.

Maxx its just votes from the both of us we get to tally in our votes after everyone else has cast. If it was every manager on the elmwood lol Not many votes would count since we gave a ton of ppl manager status to be able to edit their moderated threads. :)
