September 13th, 12:15 am - - Seattle - - Father Domenic Sozio - The Executioner
Domenic had never executed a vampire that was not chained, nor had he ever done it at night. The lycanthropes stirred as he moved past them, so palpable was the fear pouring off him.
The lord is my shepherd, I shall not want.
The circle of werecreatures, vampires and police parted as he walked up, a small leather bag held tightly in a sweaty hand. He looked at the Peacemaker, who was still holding the vampire down by the throat. The werewolf seemed so human, so utterly normal that Domenic thought at first that there had to be some kind of mistake but the vampire in the ground seemed to radiate such a thick aura of evil that he knew there could be no mistake. Not only was this an evil vampire, it was a twisted vampire, one who had long ago lost any of the humanity it had once had.
He maketh me to lie down in green pastures:
With shaking hands, Domenic set down the bag. It took two attempts to open it. He pulled out an envelope and from it removed a single sheet of paper. His mouth was dry and it took him a moment before he could speak.
"I, Domenic Sozio, acting on the power invested in me by the States of Washington, Oregon and Idaho, do hereby declare the rightful and just execution of this vampire for his crimes against the citizens of Seattle and of other places." He looked down at the vampire, careful not to make eye contact. He thought briefly of offering the vampire last rites but thought better of it. With shaking hands he pulled a silver stake and a mallet out of the bag.
"Do your worst, priest," the vampire spat, although talking was difficult with a werewolf pressing down in his throat. "I'll take all the souls of those virgin nuns that I raped down to Hell with me. I've got them inside me."
"You won't take them there," Domenic said softly, positioning the tip of the spike over the vampire's heart. "Their souls belong to God. His love for them and their love for Him shall be their salvation."
"And what of mine, priest? Do you think I chose this?"
Domenic hesitated. "No, I doubt you chose to become a vampire but I suspect you were a monster even before you felt the first bite. You might not have chosen the direction your life went but you certain chose the path you took from that point. There were other ways. You didn't need to kill and maim and rape to fill the hole in your soul. You could have filled it in other ways. You could have filled it with love. You could have filled it with forgiveness."
"I fill it with hate. I fill it with loathing. I fill it with all the things you feel for me right now."
"Then you fill it with love and forgiveness," Domenic said and all those around him smelled the lie. "And that is a great state in which to die and meet your maker." The hammer rose. "May he have mercy on your soul," he added as the hammer fell, driving the spike home.
And on mine as well....
