ANITA BLAKE - CHAPTER 11:  LIVING IN INTERESTING TIMES

It has indeed been interesting times for Seattle.  The rogue vampire was executed but that didn't spell an end to the odd happenings around the city.  The serial killer that is preying on lycanthropes has been striking during the full moons, sexually assaulting each of his victims before skinning them alive.  A number of unexplained fires have plagued the city as well, usually starting in the pre-dawn hours and targeting the nightclub scenes.  So far no one has been hurt but it is only a matter of time.  Add to this the upcoming trial of the werewolf Ulfric for his part in the rogue vampire's crime spree and Seattle is indeed an interesting place to be.  There is a reason that the Arabs considered it a curse;

February 10th 7:00 pm

It was almost two weeks before the full moon but the shapeshifter community was anything but relaxed.  The trial of the werewolf Alpha was scheduled to start soon and already speculation was rampant about what the pack would do if he was convicted.  There was an unusual undercurrent of fear as well, something that was normally absent among the majority of the shapeshifter community.  They were far more used to being predatory than prey and now those who were usually least likely to have anything to fear found themselves looking over their shoulders.  The serial killer, who had been given the bizarre nickname of Zorro, was preying on tall attractive men.

With Valentine's Day not far off, the nightclubs, restaurants and bars were anticipating a busy evening but even they were reacting to the growing number of arson cases.  Additional fire suppression systems, smoke alarms and security cameras were being installed in record numbers.  The fire department was pleased with the trend, even if they weren't happy with the reason behind it.  Their investigations had determined that there was no accelerant being used, which meant their arsonist was most likely using supernatural means to perpetrate their crimes.  It would make finding the one responsible that much more difficult.

There was a rare dusting of snow on the ground.  It wasn't expected to last for very long.  Its affect was being felt, however.  There had been several car accidents, a number of bad falls and on a ranch just outside the city, a snowball fight, started by a short wereleopard who had been missing the snow.

February 10th 7:00 pm - The Ranch - Cynara

A growl echoed through the air and a snowball flew with deadly accuracy, hitting Morvan in the face.

"I told you that I didn't want to be part of the snowball fight! I told you that I had enough snow growing up and that I hate the cold! But no! You had to go and toss one at me! So now you're going to pay!" Even though Cynara was yelling, and trying to sound angry, she had a grin on her face.

It had been a long time since she had let loose and done something as simple and fun as having a snowball fight. The last 7 months had been a big change for her. Coming down here, getting infected, moving to the ranch, getting used to who and what she was now, getting it all under control, it was a lot. But she was dealing with it, and even liking it. She had her own life here in Seattle, where she got to be who she wanted to be instead of trying to be the perfect daughter for her parents. She had her Pard. And she got to be a leopard. That was the best part. Being able to change into such a beautiful creature and run and just be. It was like nothing else in the world, and she loved it.

February 10th 7:01 pm - The Ranch - Morvan

"Is that the best you've got?"  Morvan demanded, grinning like a fiend through a mask of snow.  "If you didn't want to play, you should have stayed inside!"

The Nimir Raj was wearing a faded Pink Floyd t-shirt and a pair of jeans.  He was barefoot, which did nothing for his traction on the wet grass.  He scooped up another handful of snow and threw it, nor caring who it hit.

"Come on!  I'll take you all on!"

"I wanted to watch the snowball fight, not partake. And it's hard to watch from inside." Cynara scooped up another handful of snow and lobbed it at Morvan again.
"Did I mention that I used to play softball, and that I was a pitcher, and that I still hold the no hit record for the league?" she called out as the snowball hit her target again.

February 10th 7:00 pm – Animal House Skate Shop – Troy Dwyer

The concrete bowl at the back of the store hid a lone figure in its snowy depths. The black hoodie held a light dusting of snow across her shoulders and head, making it obvious how long she had been sat outside on her skateboard, rolling side to side. A bottle of rum dangled from her fingertips, the fire in her belly keeping her warm, but nowhere near as numb as she had hoped. A fingerless gloved hand pushed its back against her eyes and came away damp.

“For fuck’s sake, Troy, get your shit together already”, her smoky voice held a strained tone of disappointment as she took another slug of the pirate’s grog.

The shitstorm that hammered the Seattle wolf pack that was still delivering crushing blows had taken an almighty toll on the usually optimistic she-wolf. The death of her fellow pack member and potential mate opened doors of pain she never knew even existed and now in the gloom of an usually late winter, those doors were blowing a gale of misery and grief.
Troy’s bay brown eyes turned skywards, watching the loose flakes of snow fall like lazy shooting stars. Thin tears streamed down her frostbitten cheeks as she shook her head at what she perceived as her own weakness. She took a long and hungry pull on the amber liquid before fishing the cork out of her pocket and sealed the bottle.

“I’m breaking up with you, Captain”, she directed her gaze at the bottle, “It’s not me, it’s you. I think we should start seeing other people………”

A soft sob caught in the back of her throat with a flood of memories of Andrew. “Oh man, this has got to stop, like right about now would be good, thanks.”

She slowly rose, her long fingers reaching out for the skateboard to hold it by its trucks. Her gaze was directed back to the bottle, “As I was saying, Captain, this relationship of ours really isn’t working out for me”, she climbed the steep wall of the bowl and headed back towards the warm light of the store, “You’re a damned expensive date for this little red riding hood and to be honest, you make me feel pretty crappy about myself. So, this is the big goodbye. You call or try coming around to my house, I’ll..I’ll, I dunno, make you walk the plank or something.”

The bottle was dropped into the metallic black garbage can next to the back door of the store. The shifter saluted the can with two fingers as she melted into the light of indoors, “Sayonara, Captain.”

February 10th 7:02 pm - The Ranch - Katana

Katana slowly stood up from the couch with her cup of Chocolate mint tea drawn by the sounds of laughter outside. Her life had changed drastically since Morvan found her in the alley almost a year ago, However after a few winters on the streets she'd rather stay inside then play in the snow. She peered out the kitchen window seeing parts of her pard members but mostly lobbing snowballs.

She smiled to herself before taking another sip before returning to the couch beside the fire place. She rummaged to get comfortable before returning to A Clash of Kings. Katana found the character development of Daenerys Targaryen relate-able and inspiring. Once what seemed like a broken child she transformed into a strong, powerful self-sufficant woman.

February 10th 7:02 pm – Animal House Skate Shop

There was only one person in the skate shop that didn't work there and it wasn't likely that he was there to buy anything.  He didn't top five feet but he was likely over 300 pounds.  He looked like a bar fridge on legs.  He was immediately recognizable to all the werewolves in Seattle; he was 'Tiny' Tim, Lobo's Skoll and had picked up the backhanded nickname of 'the bodyguard that survived'.  That survival had come at a price.  He'd spent a week regrowing various body parts.

He'd immediately tendered his resignation as Skoll, citing his inability to deal with the wereleopard Nimir Raj and his failure to protect Lobo from the vampire.  Tom had refused to accept it, citing that only Lobo had the authority to do so.  He was, the Peacemaker insisted, running things until Lobo returned.  It left Tim at odds, questioning his ability and his purpose.  He'd also lost a good friend in Andrew, although he was fairly certain that Troy felt the loss more keenly.

"S'up, Troy?"  He still wouldn't meet her eyes.  It was a telling act of submission for an Alpha.

"No hits is right.  You've got nothing behind those shots,"  Morvan bent down to get more snow, lost his footing and went sprawling, laughing.  "They only gave you that record because you were a twelve year old girl that was going to cry if they didn't."

February 10th 7:03 pm – Animal House Skate Shop – Troy Dwyer

Tim’s voice was as unique as he was, even if it were purely for the reason that it came from so close to the ground. Troy couldn’t usually be regarded as nervy, especially considering she was imbued with the heightened senses of your common or garden variety lycanthrope, but with the delightful combination of spiced dulling sensations of the rum and a head jammed full of disorientating emotions, the short stack powerhouse caught her completely off guard.

“Sweet baby Jesus’ poopy diaper!”  her hand leapt to her chest like a startled rabbit hounded by dogs, “Totally didn’t see you there, Tim…or hear you or smell you or, yeah…..”

She stood there regarding the Skoll, marveling at how well he looked and hovered uncomfortably for a while too long, trying to decide to whether a hug would be appropriate or just plain weird. “So, uh, yeah. Unusual weather we’re having, eh?”

She rested her hand on her hip and made her way around the counter, “You know, what, screw this shit.”

Long, gangly arms that would have been more at home on an awkward teenaged boy barely wrapped around the cuboid of a werewolf and gave a solid and heartfelt squeeze; “I’m a friggen mess, Tim, a complete basketcase. I’ve spent the equivalent of a mortgage on a pretentious apartment in Capitol Hill on booze, just to ease a fraction of all the crap that’s going on in my head.”

Even with that small of a confession of emotion, Troy felt like she had already burdened Tim with far too much, uncharacteristic female histrionics. She disengaged the death-like grasp of a bear hug  and planted her long hands square on the man’s shoulders to look him over, “But enough of my sissy-assed crying, right? I mean, look at you man! You look incredible. Both arms and legs and….it's great to see you Tim.”

February 10th 7:03 pm – Animal House Skate Shop – Tiny Tim

"I miss him too."

Of all the werewolves, Tim was the one who had spent the most time with Andrew, having spent years standing at his side.   He didn't seem to know how to react to the hug.  Fighting he knew.  Emotions were something relatively foreign to him.

"Not even really sure why I dropped by," he added.  "Guess maybe you're the one who would most understand."  He shrugged massive shoulders.   Curse of being me, I guess.  Hard to kill."  Not many had heard him string so many words together.  He was the stereotypical man of few words, who let his actions speak for him.

February 10th, 7:00 p.m. - - Ryan's Apartment - - Shale

Shale's world was threatening to crumble around her, again.  She had already lost one pack and now she might end up losing another.  Lobo was going to be put on trial for his participation in the rogue vampires crimes, how they could hold him accountable for anything he did while under the control of that monster was a mystery to her but the humans didn't seem to care that he wasn't doing it of his own free will.  Andrew had given his life trying to keep Lobo out of the hands of the vampire.  The pack had taken Lobo's domination, his arrest and the death of Andrew hard, some taking it all harder then others and emotions were running rampant.  No one was really sure what was going to happen if Lobo was actually convicted but one thing was for sure, it wasn't going to be pretty.  There had been whispers from many pack members of breaking him out of jail and running, whispers of trying to rig the trial in one way or another, even out right talk from members of leaving Seattle altogether and creating a new, smaller pack in a less populated area.  Every pack member knew that Tom would not allow either of the first two options, but there was really nothing he or anyone else could do if members decided to leave.  Shale had to admit that she had fleeting thoughts about leaving more than once since Lobo had been retrieved but she just couldn't bring herself to truly contemplate leaving Ryan and the rest of the Seattle Pack.  Besides, she could empathize with the pack over there feelings of loss, especially Troy.  Although Troy and Andrew had never publicly announced their mating, Shale could see it in their eyes every time they looked at each other.  The lose of her first pack and the circumstances as to how it had happened had become common knowledge within the pack and Shale found herself as the de facto pack counselor over the past few months.  And when Troy finally dragged herself out of her depression and self - imposed funk, Shale would be there to help in anyway she could.

February 10th 7:04 pm – Animal House Skate Shop – Troy Dwyer

Troy was struck partially dumb with the amount that Tim had just said. She’d never heard him say so much, both audibly and emotionally. All she could do was nod as she hoisted herself up on to the counter to sit cross legged on the repurposed skateboard decks. The physical act pried her tongue loose, “I understand missing him, Tim. There have been days where I have thought about nothing but Andrew.  The should’ve, would’ve, could’ve beating me harder than a prize fighter in the middle of a full on ‘roid rage. Then there are days when I’m just….mad. Really fucking mad. Mad at the vamp, mad at Lobo, mad at myself……mad at Andrew. It’s crazy, because, I’m not an angry person, but my beast gets her panties all in a twist then it’s all bared fangs and raised hackles.”

The were ran a long hand through the void black of her bangs, revealing the bruise coloured rings around her dark eyes in their full glory, “Being angry achieves nothing and I know this. What’s done is done, right? We can’t bring him back, so we have to move forward. Be concerned with the mess that we’re in and put it as right as we can.”

An awkward half smile sat on her lips as her orange in her eyes glittered like a million tiny dying embers under the halogen lights, “Besides, I’m sure it’s at this point one of us is supposed to say, ‘It’s what he would have wanted’, right?”

She sighed and shook her head, the smile still steadfast on her lips, “I need to get out of this place for a bit. What says you to shouting on a few of our packmates and pretending to be the social creatures that we are?”

February 10th, 7:01 p.m. - - Ryan's Apartment - - Ryan

The pack Loki was one of those who felt the loss of Lobo most keenly.  After all, it was his job to tell the Ulfric that he was wrong and he'd been in the wrong place at the wrong time.  Ryan had been beating himself up almost as badly at Tiny Tim was, wondering if he'd have been able to do with reason what Andrew had not been able to do with brute force.  All of his logic told him that he'd have died as well but it didn't stop the guilt.

He looked at Shale, wrapped his arms around her and tucked his head into the nape of her neck.  "Thank you for being here," he said.  "I'd have been lost without you."

"I know the rage,"  Tim replied, nodding.  "It's becoming too much of a friend."  He looked at the ceiling, responding to the creak of footsteps on the floor above that no human could have heard.  "Ryan and Shale aren't too far away.  Is that social enough?"  The Skoll was on a roll as far as communication was concerned.  Likely it was why he'd sought Troy out.  Sometimes things needed to come out and she would understand.

February 10th, 7-ish PM - The Streets of Seattle - Francis

A guy could get lost in this city. But that's sort of the idea, ain't it.

Francis walked down the street from his apartment on Capitol Hill. It wasn't a mansion, but it was his, and after sleeping on the ground for a while, you'd be surprised at how comfortable a cast-off mattress found in an alleyway covered in suspicious stains really could be. You could almost grow to like the stains. They were like little adventures you could tell yourself as you drifted off to the most comfortable sleep you've had in years. And there wasn't any stress about catching a quick nap before one of the waterbed store employees discovered you stinkin' up one of their beds and then kicked you out before you were able to clock in a few z's.

These are the things that Francis Wheeley thought about as he walked about the city. He knew everything there was to know about the city. All of the good hobo camps [as well as all of the good soup kitchens], all of the cop shops. If you REALLY wanted to know, Francis [he hated being called Frankie] could tell you the locations of every Glory Hole in the city, and give you a detailed review on each one.

A guy's gotta have hobbies, amirite?

He was on his way to the bar that he worked at (Like, 'I'm-employed-and-I-get-a-paycheck' work at, not my other kind of work.), minding his own business for once. A lot had been going on in the city recently, and it was almost, almost too hard for Francis to keep up with.

These guys dying, these people taking over, these people pissed about something or other, vampires doing whatever it is that those guys do. For a lesser busybody [Francis preferred 'Infomateur'; it sounded fancy], they'd have given up trying to keep track a long time ago. But not this Informateur. He had such detailed notes, he could give you accurate odds on who would probably pull ahead in the races.

So to speak.

Though the idea of a number of the werewolves in the city chasing a stuffed rabbit around a dirt track had some artistic merit to it, to be sure. Francis chuckled to himself as he got the keys for the bar's alley entrance out of his jacket pocket and rhythmically tossed them into the air and caught them as he hummed to himself out of tune.

February 10th 7:02 pm - The Ranch - Micheal

Micheal had just gotten in from work. The enforcer of the pard hung up his hard hat and kicked off his steel toed boots.

After a long day at work he pulled his hair thick brunet hair out of its short pony tail and ran his hair through it. He padded into the kitchen to turn on the kettle to make himself a hot tea when he saw Katana sitting at the table.

His green eyes studied her as she read a book. "Good book?" He asked as he pulled a tea bag out and placed it into his black coffee mug. It had been a gift from Leslie and it had his name on it so there would always be a mug in the cupboard for him. "I'm making tea do you want one?" He asked.

Mellisa stepped outside, the blond haired hazel eyed pard member was happy to have the night off from stripping. The place hadn't been as fun to work at since Brandy had left to work for Arch Angle Industries.

It was a tense vibe to the house but Mellisa understood Brandy's motivation, money was good and a new car, lots of perks. It beat shaking her ass for money.

She waved to Morvan and Cynara. "Private party or can I hang?" She asked uncertain of her presence would be accepted.

Katana was so into her book she didn't even hear Micheal come home. She jumped a little at his voice trying to pass it off as a turn to pay attention to him. A small smile crept across her face."OH you have no idea! This series is amazing Love, family, war, betrayl, magics, dragons; it has everything but a prancing pony that farts hamburgers out its butt."

She giggled a little. "I'd be more than happy to lend it to you once im done. As for the tea," she lifted the book up exposing her cup. She looked in the nearly empty vessel" I could use a top up of hot water if it's not to much trouble. How was work today?"

Troy cocked her finger guns and aimed them directly at Tim with a wink, "That, sir, is the kind of talk I like. I haven't seen either of them since......you know, I just haven't seen them in a while. Now seems as good a time to go for an unannounced visit as any."

She dropped down from the counter and rested a long hand on the Skoll's shoulder, "Thanks Tim, I needed this. It's good to know I have great lupes at my back like you, you are pack, buddy."

A poorly aimed handful of snow that missed Mellisa by a good three foot margin was the only answer Morvan was capable of at that point.  Cynara's attack had caught him with his mouth open and he was too busy spitting out snow to speak.

Roofing had added additional tone to Morvan's frame, not that he'd been remotely close to out of shape.  He'd grown more nimble as well, from walking at odd angles carrying unbalanced loads in unpredictable weather.  He was glad the snow hadn't disappeared before he'd had a chance to enjoy it.

February 10th 7:04 pm – Animal House Skate Shop - Tim

Tim didn't react to the touch the way normal people did, he reacted in the way all shapeshifters did to the touch of their own kind.  He touched back with the Beast inside him.  It was much like him, blunt and curiously compact.  It wasn't as if his Beast was stunted, it just seemed inordinately small.  There was no denying that he was an Alpha wolf, even if he was having a crisis of faith.  There was barely restrained power in that metaphysical caress that could just as easily be turned into a weapon to be used against any wolf that Tim didn't like.

"Pack is pack,"  he answered and, to him, it was all that needed to be said, because it said so much.

There really wasn't much else to say.  It had all been said in one way or another over the past few weeks, so Shale just wrapped her arms around Ryan and held him tight.  Absentmindedly she rubbed his back with her right hand.  She couldn't imagine her life without him or the pack.  What ever happened from this day forward they would face and get through together.

Daniel was sitting at his desk going through the reports on the arson case for at least the tenth time, hoping to find something new in the words.  Although the Preternatural Unit had finally been called in to assist on the case it was not a high priority at this time as there had been nothing but property damage so far.  But still he was hoping that maybe he would notice something that had been over looked in the reports to date.  He sighed as he closed the last folder and laid it back on the pile on his desk.  Nothing new jumped out at him, not that he was really expecting it to but one could always hope.

February 10th 7:05 pm – Animal House Skate Shop – Troy Dwyer

The lanky lady wolf gave her compact comrade an affectionate half smile that showed a glimmer of her patented Dwyer charm . With his simple statement of only a handful of words and the metaphysical touch of his beast , he had said more than she needed to snatch back the coat tails of her former, fuzzy self.

"And without further ado, my fine, furry fellow. We should be off to connect with our fellow furry fellows", the half smile remained to decorate Troy's full mouth.

She ducked quickly behind the counter to retrieve a skateboard so battered that it looked as if nothing but hope was keeping it together. She ushered the Skoll out of the store, quickly punching in the alarm code with swift fingers.

As the unlikely duo meandered through Capitol Hill towards their destination in silence, a certain still comfort sat between them. The ex-pro skater hadn't felt this connected and grounded in months and she knew that feeling would increase in abundance as soon as she caught the aroma of her fellow wolves.

Troy accepted the technology as Tim's beast subsided from the potential slipper collision. She squinted at the phone as she scrolled through his contact list, "I always feel weird using other people's phones, it's like rummaging around in my mom's purse, but with less Kleenex. I mean, one slip of the finger and I've stumbled on a text that will forever change my view of someone, you never know what little nuggets of privacy you might never be able to unsee."

Eventually the listing "Ryan & Shale" rolled into view, "Ah-ha, there we go, right under the letter R, very cunning."

A thumb stabbed the call button and the electronic chirping of a ringing phone line chimed directly into the lycanthrope's ear. She chanted rhythmically in a staccato whisper with each trill, "Please don't be doing it...please don't be doing it...please don't be doing it....please don't be doing it...."

February 10th - 7:05pm - Capitol Hill, Outside Garage Billiards - Francis Wheeley

As Francis walked by the front door to head 'round back, a couple of the regulars were already waiting. These were the guys that didn't have anything better to do with their retirements than drink themselves into their graves. Not really thinking, his brain went into auto-collate mode, running their stats as he passed by each one and nodded.

Aberdeen Williams, 76, wife deceased, used to be an auto mechanic, smokes like a chimney, am consistently surprised by lack of stoma, rye and cokes.

Eliot Shakey, 80, never married, military man [Corporal?], loves the jukebox, whiskey sours.

Thom Harding, 79, happy widower [they had a good run], likes to haiku, dark ales.

Each of them nodded or waved back in return, greeting him by name and with smiles that seemed out of place on such haggard old men's faces.

This is the part of the job that Francis enjoyed; the people. But no matter where you go, people talk, and you hear things. That's what Francis looked for, Chatty Kathies. They helped keep his sidejob going, not to mention the occasional side-bet on the pool games.

Before turning round the corner, he danced a little jig, then wheeled into the alleyway leading to the back entrance merrily.

Another day, another dollar.

Lillia smiled as she took in the scent of the city, the clean crisp of the recent snow on the air mingling with the familiar scents of its inhabitants, the musk of the passing cars.  It made her happy- this is what home smells like.   She had been so busy working on the school that she hadn't been taking time to relax, something that she was now remedying... with a little cooersion from Nick of course.  She chuckled to herself over that.  Nick had quickly become more than just her King.  He was her friend, and her hero.  He was fighting for so much for the sake of them all, and she was proud to be able to help him with that.  Since she returned and met him, her fears and concerns had been dissapearing.  She hummed softly to herself as she strolled, sliding her  toes in the snow.

February 10th, 6:50 pm - Strong Investigations, John

John had said goodnight to Sandy, his assistant, over an hour ago, when she had headed up the stairs in the back to the small apartment located above his office. Sandy was a student at the Seattle Central Community College, located just a half dozen blocks away. When he moved out of his last office just over a year ago, he tossed and turned but eventually made the decision to dip into some of the money he'd been holding onto and invest in the building he put his office into figuring that if push came to shove, he would always be able to rent it or sell it back. As a result he he managed to land a nice spot at 1575 14th Avenue, nestled between a beauty sallon and a little wine shop.

The office was small but the location wasn't as bad as the previous office and had the added bonus of having a decent apartment located above as part of the deal. He figured that renting it out would always be a snap and if he ever had to give up the house, he had someplace that wouldn't need a deposit and setup fees. Sandy had come in to apply as a renter while he had been doing interviews for an assistant. She was a pretty girl with naturally red hair and light complexion. Turns out, she was also intelligent. She needed a part-time job and an apartment, I needed a renter and a full time assistant. We decided on a compromise, she would take the time she needed as a part time student and pay half what he was requesting in rent. She would get hourly wages instead of a salary and work weekends. Before he had gotten home that evening, he had started to feel like he'd let a pretty face get the better of him. He had changed his mind inside of week. Frankly, he had no idea what he was going to do when she graduated in a couple of years and moved on to bigger and better things.

He had wrapped the last of the days business, compiling the final file to be presented to his client which would lock the coffin lid tight on a cheating husband. It was Friday night and the case, while paying the bills, was fucking tedious. He needed something to get his blood pumping again so he thought he might head over to Le Cirque. The girls were cute and the place was just disreputable enough to make it interesting to people watch. Anything to relieve the tedious grind. With one or two exceptions, his life had been an insignificant grind of mediocrity for the last four years. Soon even picking a fight with a vampire might seem like a reasonable thing to do.

Maybe he should hit the firing range later, he thought, as he settled a jacket over his shoulder rig. His gun of choice was a Glock 20, non-short frame configuration. John was a big man, and all the things that made the G20 unacceptable for most people made it perfect for him. At 6'4" and in excellent shape, he needed a larger weapon to match his hands and the recoil simply wasn't an issue, even with 200 grain loads. The greater stopping power and better ballistics were just gravy. In all honesty, he'd only actually needed the weapon a couple of times in the past three years and of those times, he'd only fired it once. He preferred his hands or knives partly because instant death is less likely but mostly but mostly because it was more fun. It also didn't hurt that he was better with them.

As he settled his leather jacket onto his shoulders he began shutting down the office for the evening.

Shale gave Ryan one last squeeze then released him.  Taking the half-dozen steps to the end table, she picked up the phone without bothering to look at the caller id, figuring that only one of the pack would be calling during these trying times.  Shale just had to smile when she heard Troy's voice on the other end of the line.

February 10th, 6:59 pm - Strong Investigations, John

John finished locking up the office for the evening and made his way to his car in the parking lot next to the front door of the office. Le Cirque would be open but not exactly hopping at this hour but that wasn't a big deal. Another added bonus to having picked up this particular location was that he was about 6 blocks from the largest and most established pool halls anywhere, Garage Billiards.

You had to be deaf, dumb and blind not to be able to find a pool game there and if you had an entire evening to burn you could usually find a friendly game of bowling that you could make some cash at and it was a bit more challenging than pool so that was nice but it also took much longer to play. Not to mention the regular pool tournaments that they put on.

His normal routine was to swing by Garage Billiards for a few hours before heading over to Le Cirque. That way by the time he got there, things had just started hoping, plus he have had time to make enough cash to finance most, or all, of the evening there. It was a win-win.

He unlocked the door to his 2010 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon and smiled as he climbed in. He loved this thing. It always made him smile to think that the only reason he waited on traffic was because he didn't want to get a ticket for taking to the sidewalk to drive over the buildings that were in his way. The jeep could pretty much replace the crow for the definition of straight line and he loved to go off-roading with it. It was the monster truck of normal sized vehicles. He started the engine, put it into 1st gear and went to go see about making some money.

"Please don't be.......Oh! Hey Shale!" The grin on the wolf's face could be heard across the wireless network, "It's just me, Troy."

Not a trace of embarrassment  from being caught in the middle of her mantra could be found in her husky tones, "Tim and I just stepped out of my place and we were thinking that maybe some pack time would be good times. Are you and the advocate of the devil up to anything particularly colourful this fine and unseasonably dreadful evening?"

Lillia caught the scent easily and immediately knew that it belonged to a strange rat.  They were making no attempts to hide themselves, in fact it seemed as if there was a deliberate attempt to put themselves upwind from the albino wererat, so that she would know they were there.

Lillia's nose could tell her far more that her eyes at this point.  The other rat was female and smelled freshly bathed, but the scent that clung to her clothing clearly identified her as one of Astrid's rats.  She wasn't afraid, so much as nervous.

"Damn.  I knew I should have come over right after lunch.  I'm guessing you don't do business on the street corner, Mr Strong?"

The woman speaking was almost as tall as John was.  She wore flats to prevent herself from towering over the majority of the population.  She work a long heavy leather trench coat to keep the chill away.  It looked expensive but not because it had an Italian name stitched into the lining.  She wore no make-up. Her hands were tucked into her pockets and she took her time appraising him as she waited for his response.

February 10th 7:08 pm - Out and About -Lillia

Lillia had never been one to leap before she looked.  Yes, technically she was an alpha, and very possibly a rather impressively powerful one, but no one would know it by looking at her.  She just had the pleasant and calm exterior that made people - even other weres - seriously doubt she could lay down a proper hurting, and that suited her just fine, since she preferred not fighting if she could help it.  Still, she had to admit a few very unsavory thoughts ran through her head at the scent she couldn't help but smell.  It was one of Astrid's rats after all, and she doubted the queen rat liked her very much.

Even with her doubts- and she had them, they were evident in her scent and her beast's movements- she still stopped, taking a moment to still the stirrings within as she turned toward the smell.  "Can I help you?"  she asked, smiling cautiously.

February 10th, 7:01 pm - Strong Investigations, John

John quickly checked his surroundings as he put the jeep in neutral before giving all his full attention to the woman.  Jesus, this chick is tall, he thought.

He took in her took in her expensive clothing, relaxed stance and height. Let me see, he thought; female, dressed expensively, alone over an hour after sunset, reeking of confidence and knows exactly who she's looking for on sight. He wondered randomly if she were married.  He casually checked his surroundings again out of old habit, after all, if he couldn't see it, he couldn't do anything about it.  This could be either good money or interesting, hopefully both.  Or, answered a voice in the back of his head, a setup by one of those true fanatics who still think I need to be punished somehow for disappointing them. It hadn't happened often and nothing in the last year but he hated those fuckers with a passion normally reserved for child molesters and rapists.

He smiled pleasantly at the woman and said, "Good evening. You have me at a disadvantage, Ms..."

February 10th 7:09 pm - Out and About

"I hope so."  The girl looked about seventeen.  she had a haunted look on her face that spoke of being badly used.  She was young and pretty and rats were lusty creatures.  If she couldn't attach herself to a strong enough male, she was fair game for any rat higher up the food chain and there wasn't much Astrid could do unless she wanted to spend every waking second of her time beating  the males in her Rodere.

She looked around nervously but it seemed habitual.  "I've seen stuff.  Astrid doesn't want us talking to the cops but a friend of mine lost her job.  Do you think, maybe, you could get me to one of the cops that will listen?  Everybody says Nick's rats are working with the cops, so I figure you'd be a good one to ask.  I mean, everybody knows Nick listens to you."

"Fontaine.  Rachel Fontaine."  She extended a hand.  Her handshake was firm and no nonsense, the sort of handshake John would have expected from another man.  Her hands were not rough but only because she had taken the time to deal the callouses.

"I don't suppose you've been paying attention to the fires that have been destroying all the local meat markets?  Well, the second meat market than burned down was called 'Fontaine's'.  Three guesses as to why.   The police and the fire marshal are 'investigating' -she used her fingers to put the word in quotes-  "but they're overworked and underpaid.  My insurance company isn't willing to pay out unless they can find proof that I wasn't involved in a Jewish lightning strike.  Do I have your interest yet?"

John raised his eyebrows after she introduced herself and allowed himself a moment to wonder what her personal story was like before speaking again.

"Well, Ms. Fontaine, to answer your first question, I prefer not to do business on the street corner but that won't stop me from doing so.  To answer your second, to be honest, I've heard about the fires but no more than anyone else who can either skim a newspaper headline or turn on a television while fixing a cup of coffee, and to answer your third, you do, indeed, have my interest", he said with slight smile.

"Before we go any farther, I was on my way over to the Garage Billiards to get in a few games of pool.  I find that it relaxes me.  It's not far, a half dozen blocks or so and not so busy that we can't find a quiet spot and discuss your situation and see if I can help.  Would that suit or would you prefer to go into my office?"

February 10th, 7:04 pm - Outside Strong Investigations - Rachel Fontaine

"I'd hate to make you open up your office after you've locked up.  Besides, I'm game for a few rounds of pool.  What do you say to a buck a ball while we talk turkey?"  She smiled, showing strong white teeth.  "It's been a while but I'm forced to admit to a misspent youth, if you know what I mean."

She didn't wait for his answer.  She simply turned and walked to where her Ford Explorer was parked.  It chirped as she deactivated the alarm and opened the door.   She paused before she climbed in.   "Race you there for a ten percent discount?"

John chuckled, "Given I'm still mis-spending my youth, I'd say that sounds like the best offer I've had in quite a while." he grinned then, and as he pulled up beside her explorer said, "As for the race, you win, you get a ten percent discount. I win, the tab tonight is yours."

He didn't really care about the ten percent.  Hell, no one had even discussed money and he didn't  know if the job was something he would take.  The bet was the fun part though; what would you risk to win it and would it work.  That in itself gave you some insight into the other player.  He gave a mental nod to the wisdom of the city council that saw fit to avoid putting any traffic cameras in this area.

Lillia colored prettily.  "Well, yes, I suppose he does.."  She admitted.  Then she straightened somewhat, sliding off the sunglasses that she habitually wore to fix the girl with a searching look.  For her to be here, to have approached her, spoke of a great deal of courage, especially considering for her to go against her queen means that she must either face dire punishment or leave the rodere for her own safety.  "I can definately get you in touch with who you need to talk to."  She said.  She made it clear with that statement that she was not going to pry.  "Come with me."  She turned toward the direction of the police station.

February 10th, 7:10 PM - Garage Billiards - Francis Wheeley

Now tucked warmly inside the Garage, only one out of the multitude of tables in use by Aberdeen and Shakey, the pool balls clattered quietly while Van Halen's guitars squealed from the jukebox. [Halen was Shakey's choice; the man really did just love listening to anything and everything.] Thom sat at the bar like he always did, reading the newspaper that was always under his arm. A television behind the bar itself sat and flashed sitcoms at Francis mutely. This early in the night, there wasn't a lot of chatting [which meant not a lot of work], aside from the occasional haiku from Thom:

"My glass is empty.
It has nothing inside it.
I am a sad man."

"And it's shit like that that makes me really like you, Thom," Francis said, as he plonked a fresh pint down in front of the old man.

Thom smiled around the rim of his glass, his brilliant, white push-broom moustache dipping into the head of his ale.

What more is there to say? that look seemed to ask.

It had been a close race.  Rachel would have taken it, had a Hyundai not tried to make an illegal turn from the wrong lane.  She's laid on the horn, lost traction and ended up narrowly missing the front end of a bus.  John took the opportunity to sneak past behind the little car and was already parked when Rachel's truck pulled in.

"Looks like the tab is on me," she said, clearly not bothered by the concept.  "Shall we start with food and progress to beer and pool or do you want to start with the wet stuff right away?"

She held the door for him, clearly not one to stand on feminine privilege.

John gave a slight bow as he walked through the door and said, "Lets start with pool and the wet stuff, we can order food while we're getting warmed up."

He walked in and took a look at the tables, picking one that had an unoccupied corner table next to it. "You did a good job on the drive over, you drive like nut job", he grinned, "If that little car hadn't gotten in the way you'd have beat me. Most people don't show that kind of confidence. Mind if I ask where you get it from?"

He was intrigued by her, which hadn't happened in a while. Best of all, she was distracting him from the tedium of his daily life. He wondered when that would come to an end.

February 10th 7:12 pm - Out and About - Lillia

So many things were going through Lillia's mind as she walked.  She was honestly amazed at the girl's courage in seeking her out, in going against her queen deliberately like this.  She was also a bit surprised at what the girl had said. 'Everyone knows Nick listens to you.'  Could that really be true?  They way she had said it.. it felt somehow important.  She pushed that from her mind, however, deciding that she would call Nick while the girl was talking to the police.

She nodded to herself, pausing as she looked up at the police station, glancing back at the girl before leading the way inside and going to the front counter.  "Hello.  My name is Lillia Sumner.  I am a member of the Preternatural Crimes Advisory Board, and I have with me a young lady in need of speaking to someone on the Preternatural Crimes team.  Is there someone available to speak with her?"

Adalyn meandered through the mall heading for the food court, she'd called her sponsor and set up their first meeting. It was the first time she'd been able to get a break from her class work to be able to get the chance to hook up with her new Rodere. It was especially important that she make this meeting with the full moon so close.

She'd still been at home in Mississippi during the last full moon so she hadn't needed to worry about it. And she'd talked to Anne a couple of times on the phone but really hadn't been able to get away from her studies.

 February 10th - 7:15 PM - Garage Billiards - Francis Wheeley

Customers! Francis' sharp eye immediately sought them out at the first sign of movement from the door.

Turns out, it was that football playing guy who got himself booted from the league for some sort of foul play. On whose part Francis wasn't sure, but the whole thing was a big deal on The Big News, which meant that one had to take that information with a generous helping of salt. Season to Taste, if you will.

The woman who followed him through the door was a big name in the bar scene. She's built herself up from nothing but being great at negotiating, and having an odd knack for sports wagers. There was always something shady about someone who was Good at Gambling, but then again, that was just the way Francis eyed everyone.

The entire thought process happened in a matter of seconds, his brain once again doing it's automatic tic-and-tally of the information it had, and who he had it on. If anything, it was a fantastic mental exercise that kept him sharp and ready whenever he needed to be.

Francis waited at the bar, eyeing his new customers casually to see whether or not they were going to come to the bar. A pair of fresh-chilled glasses at the ready. He knew, at the very least, that this John fellow liked a good beer. A fancy chick like Ms. Fontaine would probably want a cocktail or the like, but Francis hated to ever assume.

February 10th 7:05 pm - Jonah's home - Jonah

The home saw little of Jonah.... Most saw little of Jonah. He kept busy and to himself. However, he did keep himself a little networked with social groupings outside of work. The flame-haired fox could be seen in his home office; bare foot and hair down. He sat, with emerald orbs on the screen. this lycan still catered more to his human nature then anything. It was not that he did not embrace his fox side, he just loved much of what he would if he were still human. Jonah often spoiled himself.

Jonah was relaxing before his computer; dressed comfortably. His hair swept the shoulders just slightly and a faint smile upon those lips. he was contented with a game or two on his computer and music pushing through the moderately sized home. He typed a few things here and there, drank tea and played a game. None would have guessed it about him but it was a casual thing. It was his own world and all the stresses of the world did not phase him in that world... unless something interrupted that world... Oh reality... both beautiful and yet straining. No pleasure comes without some sort of pain.

"I believe there is an officer from that division available," the sergeant behind the desk replied.  His words and his appearance hadn't changed upon their arrival but his scent gave away the fact that he had suddenly become much more aware and prepared.  He was good enough to fool most humans but it was difficult in the extreme to hide anything from a shifter's nose.

He picked up the desk phone and dialed a four digit extension.  "Lafeat?  This is sergeant Wilson at the front desk.  "One of the members of the advisory board has brought someone in to talk to you."  He hung up the phone and gestured towards a number of faded couches.  "He'll be down to meet you in a few minutes.  Take a seat over there, if you don't mind."

February 10th, 7:14 pm - Garage Billiards, John

Without waiting to see how she would respond, or even if she would respond, he strode towards the table he had picked out. He almost began to shrug out of his jacket then realized that he had forgotten to take his gun out and lock it up in his jeep. Shit. He had to admit, he would love to see the look on everyone's face but there were some forms of attention that you just didn't want. Not to mention he didn't want to scare off a potential new client.

New plan; he could unsnap the tie downs from his belt and take the rig off with the jacket. It was a Jackass Shoulder rig from Galco. It looked, and wore, like a pair of suspenders, that crisscrossed in the back with an ammo carrier on one side and the holster on the other. He like it because it meant he had the weight reasonably distributed and it didn't make running or wide movements awkward.

He turned to face the wall, undid the tie-down snaps, and pulled the jacket off one arm at a time, using a whisper of ability to keep the weapon hidden by the leather jacket as much as possible, folding the jacket around it all and placing it neatly in the corner chair before turning back.

February 10th, 7:14 pm- An old abandoned building - Tristan crow

Nomads, drifters the misfortunes and unwanted hid in the old building that were lucky that the city had not bothered to tear down. Tristan was one of them. The lad chopped his hair and took to cheating others in little card tricks and gambling to make money... among other things.... What he did with that money? Bought a couple things for himself but used most of it to feed as many as he could. Was he a saint... not in the least. He was sneaky and as stated.... a cheat. But the lad got some comfort in doing what he did and that might as well have made him a little selfish. When he slept, there was a small space that he could squeeze into and practically bury himself into until the sun goes down. Dead to the world and difficult to find.

It wasn't hard to pick Anne out of the crowd.  Any number of things gave her away.  The way she moved was pure animal and it drew a number of looks, despite the fact that she wasn't dressed to impress, in well worn jeans and a battered leather jacket.  She was clearly an Alpha and a powerful one.  Adalyn could feel Anne's Beast as her sponsor took a seat across from her.  It rubbed against Adalyn's Beast, dismissed it as not being a threat and casually moved away.

"Welcome to Seattle,"  Anne said, not bothering to shake hands.  "Do you want to talk her and frighten the nulls or shall we go for a walk?"  She sat half in the seat and half out, clearly happy with either option.   "I'll spell out Nick's rules for you, just so they're fresh in your mind.  Then you get to meet him.  If he says you stay, then you stay.  At this point I don't see a problem.  Can you think of any reason why there might be one?"

Rachel slid a fifty across the bar.  "One table, two pitchers of draft and a quick rundown of what specials you have on tonight," she said.  "Let me know when we've run through that or how much change I have coming when it's time for me to leave.  Impress me and I'll see what I can do about making sure it's worth your while."

She met Francis's eyes squarely, treating him as something slightly lower down the food chain than she was.  "Bring them over to the table by the wall."  She gave him a wink and turned away.

The blind wereleopard laughed at his words, even if she couldn't see his antics. Her beast chirruped as his wrapped reached out to wrap around those on the deck. She was still getting used to it reacting to the others in such a manner.

"So it would seem, but honestly you seem relaxed today, and I doubt it is just the snow that has made you so chipper."

February 10th 7:17 pm - Alderwood Mall - Adalyn

Adalyn didn't shudder as Anne's beast tested hers in the subtle manner of Alphas. "Thanks, no one warned me that it would be so...um...wet all the time." she joked, "I wouldn't mind taking a walk." She said as she got up and moved towards the exit, "I just figured a mall would be a good as any place to meet someone you've never seen before; besides I'm a transplant so I don't know all the territories like the rest of you guys so neutral ground is always a good bet to go with."

She laughed, "I hope I don't get ousted by Nick on the first meeting, it would make for an unpleasant four years not to have a Rodere during the furry time. As far as problems that might arise with me joining with you guys there shouldn't be. I know my old king told Nick about my high school years as the lone squeaky toy for a pack of adolescent  testosterone addled lupines...and trust me I came out of that with not only a diploma, but a degree in hard knocks with a minor in use of sarcasm as a survival technique."

"Ooo...sorry I'm rambling, nerves I guess." Adalyn said even though her Beast seemed to be giving off an air of absolute calm, it showed that she did have control to some certain degree.

February 10th, 7:14 p.m.  - -  Ryan's Apartment  - -  Shale

Shale just had to smile at the enthusiasm that appeared in Troy's voice.  "I think we can manage to find room for the two of you."  Since landing in Seattle Shale had managed to take driving lessons, get her license and buy a small, used SUV.  "We'll see you in a few minutes then darling."  Shale hung up and then made five quick calls to other pack members, starting the chain that would put the invitation out to the rest of the pack.  Turning back to Ryan she spoke.  "Troy and Tiny Tim will be here in a few minutes love.  We're going to be giving them a ride out to the preserve for a little fresh air and exercise.  And I don't want to here any arguments about you not feeling like being around anyone else.  We all need this, you just as much as the rest of the pack."  She tried to give Ryan a stern look but the slight mischievous glint in her eyes ruined the effect.

February 10th, 7:17 p.m.  - -  Seattle P.D.  - -  Daniel

"I would be more than happy to help you lovely ladies out in anyway I can.  Would you like to go to the office or would the two of you feel more comfortable someplace else.  There is a nice little cafe just around the corner if you ladies would like some food"  As Daniel waited for an answer he took a good look at the young lady that Lilla had brought in with her.  Other then seeming a little nervous, there was really nothing that would make her stand out anymore than any other lovely young lady in the city.  He was kind of hoping that they would say they were hungry or at least that one of them would be more comfortable outside the station.  It was almost an hour and a half past his dinner break and he was getting a little tired of eating stale chips from the vending machine.

February 10th, 7:19 p.m.  - -  Seattle P.D.

The look on the young girl's face made it clear that having the conversation outside was a less than ideal solution.  Lillia could feel the hairs on her arms standing erect as her Beast reacted to the sudden flare of fear.

"Maybe this is a bad idea," she said, rising.  "I probably don't know anything important anyway.  I should just go so I'm not wasting anybody's time."  The look on her face was one of disappointment and there was a trace of uncertainty.  She had risked everything to come here and the cop was treating her like she wanted to discuss the weather, expecting her to talk to him in public.  Astrid would be able to tell by the smell that she'd not only been to the police, she had done so in the company of one of Nick's advisors.  She would never be able to go home.

Daniel caught the stricken look on the young woman's face and felt a pang of guilt.  "I didn't mean to cause you any undue alarm or stress miss," he said to the young woman.  "I was not sure if you might be more comfortable in a less formal location.  Mama V has a back room that we could use at the cafe but if you would feel more comfortable here I think I can find us a private room to talk in.  Provided you can find it in your heart to forgive me for causing you such distress.  And you would never be wasting my time no matter how much of an impact your information has an one of our cases."  He turned his attention to Lillia briefly.  "Feel free to make your call from here Miss Lillia.  I can find you an empty office if you would like some privacy.  Please don't concern yourself with my stomach," he said with a laugh in his voice.  "I will call Mama V's and have something delivered after your friend is done speaking with me.  Unless either of you ladies are hungry, then I can call now and order whatever the two of you would like as well."

February 10th 7:13 pm – The mean streets of The Emerald City – Troy Dwyer

Speaking with one more member of the pack lifted Troy's spirit's further. The weeks she had taken in seclusion after the shit storm that had hit her and much of the other preternatural folks of Seattle lives had done far from help the healing process. The voices of two of her relocated pack, however, had been the shot in the arm she had so desperately needed. The smile on her face under the later winter darkness shone like a thousand universes and only someone with an empathetic gift could even sniff at the hint of her sorrow.

She dug around in her coat pocket as the rounded the corner that held Ryan's comic book store and apartment and fished out a battered package of Hubba Bubba. Her long fingers deftly unwrapped a few square bundles and the pink wads were jammed into her wide mouth. What was left of the package was offered to her squat consort just as they were ducking into the doorway. With her free hand, Troy tapped the buzzer in the rhythm of the opening beat of The Terminator theme.

February 10th 7:18 pm - Leaving Alderwood Mall - Anne

"Nerves my ass," Anne said with a snort, before steering Adalyn towards a different exit.  "You just like to talk.  That degree in hard knocks will get put to the test.  There's a big difference between keeping a puppy with a boner in line and actually scrapping it up with one.  In Seattle, they outnumber us something like twelve to one and right now they are a little touchy.  Their Ulfric got taken over by a vampire and is up on some fairly serious charges.  Whether his lawyer can get him off or not is going to be one of the factors that determines how safe this city is for us."

She stepped out into the slush, making no comment about the cold.  "There are two rat factions.  We're not exactly at war but we're not sharing living space either.  make sure you know which rats you're dealing with or you'll get yourself pretty badly mauled."

Ryan gave Shale a kiss on the nose.  "Good thing we're taking your car.  Mine would be about as useful on this stuff as roller skates.   I'm not going to argue about hooking up with some of the pack.  I'm just going to point out that we should really get permission from the top dog before we run off to the preserve without asking."  He looked at her and shrugged.  "Hey, I'm still the Loki.  I still have a job to do."

He picked up the phone and dialed Tom's number.  It didn't take long for him to get the Peacemaker's stamp of approval on the impromptu meeting.  He was grinning when he hung up.  "He's going to meet us there.  He might even be bringing Lobo, if he can arrange it.  Cross your fingers but don't hold your breath."

"When I was younger and it would snow my brother would take me sledding, and tell me that the world looked like it had been glazed in glass and diamonds. That the ground would sparkle in shades of blue, at times I mourned not being able to see it, but then again I could smell the clean crispness in the air and I could always hold on to the pristine look my brother had built for me than seeing it melt or get dirty from passing cars."

February 10th - 7:14 PM - Garage Billiards - Francis Wheeley

Francis grumbled as he poured, something about saying please, but the wink she tossed him was appreciated, so his bitching was short-lived. He was over at the newcomers' table with a pitcher of cheap, tasty beer. He began a run-on sentence:

"I know you asked for two, but I'm planning on just pouring you the next one when you're just about done with this one. That way your beer won't get cold, 'cause that's a travesty lucky for you folks it's 'Shitface Shunday' and sure it ain't Sunday but you won't remember that after you get shitfaced right? so that's the whole point pitchers are five bucks shots are two so far you're booked for ten bucks outta your fifty for the two pitchers the one you got here and the one I've got lined up for you if you decide you want shots shout the name of a booze at me and I'll bring it over oh and don't go orderin' anything too fancy because chances are we're not gonna have it and if we do we're probably not gonna use it for shots."

His speech finished, he nodded with a smile and slapped a running receipt onto the small pool table side table

Ain't that a mouthful

then nodded and headed back to the bar to leave the couple to their game of pool.

"No point in rewind.  Most of what he said was hot air.  In answer to your question, simple math," Rachael answered, reaching for a pool cue.  "The cops have more crimes to investigate than there are cops.  Your workload isn't anywhere near as full.  Besides, you aren't a cop and people will say things to you that they wouldn't say to a cop."  She grinned.  "And I can always sweeten the pot in ways the police can't.  My pockets for bribes are deeper than theirs.  Of course my expectations of return on investment is higher, so it balances out.  I think you're shelling out more than the information you're getting is worth, I close the bank."

She carefully applied chalk to the tip of her cue.  "Don't just stand there, pretty boy, rack 'em. And you at the bar," she added, raising her voice.  "One is for him, one is for me.  Now bring me my second damned pitcher."

February 10th, 7:16 p. m.  - -  Ryan's Apartment - -  Shale

Shale gave a mental shrug as Ryan made the call to Tom.  She was planning on making the call herself, but she wasn't going to ask permission.  She was simply going to tell Tom there was a gathering at the Preserve and that he needed to get his butt in gear and get down there to socialize with the rest of them.  But she had to concede that Ryan's way was probably the better way to go about it.  At least him making the call was starting to help pull him out of his self-imposed funk.  She heard the doorbell and fairly bounced down the stairs to open the door.

Shale had Troy wrapped up in a giant hug even before the door was half way open.  "It's about time you called."  That was all she was going to say on the matter till Troy decided it was time to talk.  She spotted Tiny and scooped him into a hug as well.  "It's good to see you Tiny," she whispered into his ear.

"Best I can," came the reply as the Loki threw his arms most of the way around Tiny Tim.  "Good to see you, man."

John gave a mock sigh and said, "Well, I knew it wasn't my rugged good looks but until now I still held out hope".

He grinned at her suddenly. "As far as being hustled goes, no. At least, not yet. This is just some simple applied  physics and trigonometry. I learned that no matter how strong you are, you can never be strong enough. So you have to learn where to apply that strength. Doesn't matter if it's kung-fu, football, pool or politics, it's just a fact of life. There's always something stronger."

He paused for a moment before he took his next shot grinned and said, "Of course, it never hurts to be the strongest dog in the fight, either."

He took the easiest shot on stripes he could find and asked, "So, what do I need to know about this case that you aren't telling me?"

"Honestly, I'm quite positive she isn't an alpha.  As to what made her think to cross her queen.. The only thing that comes to mind is desperation."  Sadness entered Lillia's soft voice.  "It's easy to see she was badly misused, in many ways.  Either she has something terribly important to tell the police and was hoping we might keep her alive to do that, or perhaps what she has to say is an excuse to make a move she was too terrified to make otherwise.  Either way, I'll call you when we are finished here as you wish. "  She replied.  Once she hung up the phone she exited the office, placing a soft smile on her pale lips.

"All done."  She said as she approached the other office.

The young snow leopard tilted her head to the side as she listened to Morvan lay out his thoughts of the upcoming trail and the fallout that would eventually happen. She reached out, searching for a hand or a shoulder to pat in commiseration.

"You are right that things are going to be..." she paused looking for a word that would have the strength to express the situation properly, "...tense; for lack of a proper word. I think it will be much worse for those living with in the city as opposed to us out here at the ranch.

"I know I'm not an Alpha, but if you don't mind hearing a suggestion I think perhaps for the safety of our pard and mayhap the other communities, that traveling alone within the city during this trail should be cautioned against."

Old Thom shot a nervous glance over his shoulder to the woman playing pool with the old football player, then looked back to Francis. "Ain't you gonna get her her other pitcher? You heard her shout atcha, right?"

Francis looked severely unconcerned. "Nossir. I told the lady I'd bring them another once the one they were on was near-finished so it didn't get too cold. If she wants to get pissy about it, she can get pissy about it. It's all the same beer, anyway, it's not like another pitcher'll change how it tastes." Francis flicked a peanut rind off the bar idly. "Besides, you know how good a bartender I am. I'll be on it like flies on shit."

February 10th between 7:14 and 7:17pm – Just outside of Casa del R & S – Troy Dwyer

The disapproval from her furry teammate evoked a playful reaction in the harmonics of the ghost of sitcoms past, “Whatchu talkin’ bout, Willis?!”

When the door was flung wide and she was enveloped in a Shale sized hug she let herself just exist in that single moment. Both she and her beast closed their eyes and for that split minute and a half, God was in his heaven and everything was right with the world.

“Ha! Call, yeah! Telephones! They are awesome with their technology!” the jovial quip managed to skim over the awkwardness she felt in herself imposed temporary exile to Drunkard Island.

She rocked on the balls of her feet with a bizarre cocktail of excitement and lingering awkwardness as Shale and Tim embraced. Her beast sat with ears perked and panting, but with a thousand mile stare that was unfathomable. As soon as she was given the go-ahead to enter the abode she bounded up the stairs two at a time. Troy’s honeyed tones sung through the apartment as she clapped eyes on her Loki, “Get on over here and give the Troy some love.”

The young girl looked very relieved when Lillia reappeared.  She seemed to gather herself, then entered the office and sat down in a chair.

"On the sixteenth of January, I snuck into Fontaine's a bar down on 5th.  A friend of mine works there and she let me in the back door."  She paused, looking at Daniel.  "I don't need to give her name, do I?"

"Only if we need her to back up your story."

The girl nodded and continued.  "I was enjoying the music, dancing and having a good time, when I noticed this guy leaning against the bar.  He paid to have a couple of drinks delivered to one of the girl and even requested a couple of songs for her.  she didn't even look at him.  I was kinda feeling sorry for him but then I caught a whiff of him.  He smelled weird.  He wasn't a shapeshifter or a bloodsucker but he didn't smell human.  It set alarm bells off, so I bailed.  I was heading around the back alley to make my way back home when I saw him come into the alley.  He leaned against the wall for a few moments, then some blue light came off his hands, like some kind of lightning.  The wall was stone but it burned for a few moments and the light traveled up the wall until it founds something that would burn.  As soon as that happened, the guy booked it."

The third hug of the evening after weeks of no physical contact made Troy wonder if wolves could purr. Her beast’s tongue was lolling out of her mouth to one side and if her tail could wag any harder it would be the next Olympic table tennis champion.

“I’d love to take all the credit for the joining of forces tonight, but that would make me both a thief and a liar.  My special guest star appearance is all down to Tim and a night of furry friends biting the heads off of prey mammals was all your good lady’s idea.”

Her grin was a mile wide and her long hands rubbed together in an obvious excitement, “Hot damn if I’m not so excited I could just pee my pants. Actually….seriously, I really need to pee, its freaking cold out there and my poor sunshine spoiled ass is not dealing well, so I’ll just, you know”, her roan eyes darted down the hall, “Go do the little girl sit down dance.”

She darted into the lavatory locking the door behind her. Troy’s entire body vibrated with a cacophony of emotions. Elation, loss, excitement, anger, longing, love, hunger, joy and anxiety all jostled for a place to be heard and recognised.

Something had to give, so the sour contents of her stomach soundlessly erupted from her mouth and fortuitously landed neatly in the sink between her outstretched hands. The were hung her head and slowly sucked deep gulps of air into her lungs between spitting the last of the bile from her mouth. Tears from the force of the vomiting rolled down her flushed cheeks as she turned to flush the toilet to coincide with her charade.

The sink was blasted with a jet of cold water and Troy guzzled a mouthful of water to help the last vestiges of puke exit out of her mouth. With one hand she turned the tap off and with the other she wiped her mouth with the back of her hand. She stood under the fluorescent lights looking hard at the dark panda patches around her warm, eyes then ran a hand through her ebony hair, “Fuck me, Dwyer. You are one hot mess, baby girl.”

A piece of bubblegum was retrieved from her hoodie pocket and popped into her mouth. A bubble the size of a baseball appeared the same time she exited the bathroom and burst as she returned to the livingroom . As she peeled the hot pink film from her nose and chin she grinned at her hosts and accomplice, “BANG! BANG! BANG! VAMANOS! VAMANOS! There is a critter out there that has my name written all over it and it cannot wait to meet its maker.”

February 10th, 7:21 pm - Garage Billiards, Lieutenant Shannon

Lieutenant Shannon lounged back in the seat of the black sedan he drove. Fear's "The Record" blared from the speakers in the car. Jack ashed his cigarette out the cracked window of the Maybach 62 Zeppelin. The Black car had been an expensive gift from a friend. Jack had been finding himself in situations where people wanted to give him gifts more and more often. He took another drag on the Camel full flavored filtered cigarette. He tapped along to the music with his hand against the steering wheel.

He half sung along with the song about there being so many of us. Then he flicked his cigarette out into the Seattle night. The cherry flashed like a bead in the dark. Sparks flashed like the inside of a steel factory in miniature when the Camel collided into the cement of the parking lot. The Lieutenant raised his window and killed the engine. He stepped out and locked the car behind him. Ahead of him was the exterior to The Garage Billiards. The bar/bowling alley/pool hall was a place he'd been meaning to check out for quite some time.

Jack's violet eyes took in the outside of the building. The painted green brick, the big letters spelling out "Garage", the warehouse windows, it was all fascinating to look at. He decided it was as good a time as any to give the place a go, since he was done with his shift.

He stepped through the doors of the entrance. He marveled for a moment at the long rows of pool tables, and the sheer Cyclopean size of the interior. Then he collected himself and walked to the bar.

"How's it going?", Jack asked the bartender as he leaned on the counter, "Got any drink specials?"

February 10th, 7:22 pm - Garage Billiards - Francis Wheeley

Francis smiled at the customer who had sidled up to the bar smelling like a fresh cigarette. "It's 'Shitface Sunday', 'cause yeah, maybe it ain't Sunday, but you won't remember that by the time you get outta here. That just means pitchers are five bucks, shots are two, and since you're very obviously new, let me get you a fresh head, on the house, huh?"

A fresh, chilled glass appeared in his hand from the mini-fridge used for nothing more than chilling glassware, and he began to pour Jack a crisp, stout beer. "You look like a stout man, but stop me if I'm wrong."

He slapped a coaster onto the bar, and gently placed the beer on top of it. Nudging a finger at Thom, he added, "Don't mind ol' Thom if he starts gettin' a little poetical at ya. He's like that."

"I'm a beer man in general," Jack grinned whilst picking up the proffered dark beer, "I appreciate the enthusiasm kid but I got work in the morning. Don't get me wrong, there's nothing I'd rather do than sit right here and get just fucking shitty. Maybe pick up some broad who likes the suit and the drinks I keep sending her way. That would be a pretty ideal night."

Jack took a deep draught of the beer. He smacked his lips and replaced the beverage back on its coaster. He scanned the room slowly, his fingers slowly drumming on the edge of the bar top. He briefly met eyes with the one who the bar tender pointed out at Thom. He gave the guy a quick nod before going back to eyeing up the place. He spotted a man and a woman playing pool. The man was a big bastard, the girl looked familiar. He took another sip of his beer, leaving the glass on the closer side of empty.

"You're a good man. I don't know how the hell you keep the shot prices so low, but it'll be a cold day in hell before you catch me complaining about that. Let me get a shot of Jack, just to get the insides warmed up a bit," he turned back to the bartender as he spoke, reaching into the inside pocket of his brown jacket and removing his bill fold. "Say, didn't that guy over there with the pretty broad playing pool used to play for the Seahawks?"

"Well, I'm not sure if I should be happy or disappointed about the police psychics. One the one hand, the cops could really use a good psychic or two. On the other, who watches the watchmen? There's a reason that people get uncomfortable with the thought of police abusing their power. How much temptation would a telepathic cop feel?"

Daniel started to sit then paused for a split second as what the girl just told him sunk in.  He quickly jotted down every word she had said then let out an internal sigh.  No wonder the fire department was having trouble pinning down these fires.  If the girl was right then they were going to have one hell of a time, not only finding this guy, but stopping him as well.  "Did you see or hear anything else that night?  Anything at all?  It might not seem relevant to you but it might help us out.  And do you think you got a good enough look at this guy to give us a description?"  A description was the last thing he wanted to ask her to give.  She was afraid enough already but if she had gotten a good enough look to even give a partial description of what the guy looked like then it would be a big help.

"I know you are scared to hell of this guy and you have every right to be.  But if you could give us even the vaguest of descriptions it would be a tremendous help.  Anything at all like how tall he was; about how much he weighed; was he white, African-American, Asian; hair color; eye color.  Any little thing would better then what we have right now."  He noticed Lillia's reaction to what the girl had said but kept his attention on the frightened were-rat.

Lillia couldn't help the little smile the tugged at the edge of her lip.  Still, she was concerned.  Anything in this city remotely preternatural that put people in danger tended to have a heavy effect on all preternatural creatures living here.  Now that they knew the arsonist was not a normal human, things were going to get worse, and that wasn't something they needed with the werewolf alpha still facing trial.  And of course this girl might not be afraid of the arsonist, but she was afraid of her Queen.  She didn't blame Daniel for mistaking what the girl was afraid of. Non weres had a tendency to not understand the mentality.

She settled back in her chair to think while she waited for Daniel to finish with his questions so she could call for thier ride.  She had a feeling the Rat situation in the city was about to escalate.

John gave a mental sigh as she turned the talk to all business. She was cute and it was rare that he met someone like her. On the plus side, it wouldn't hurt his odds later if he solved the case for her. And, yet a bigger bonus, what if this guy really was a pyrokinetic? That would be wild!

John glanced at the cop saying, "I think entirely depends on if he recognizes me and what kind of opinion he had of my previous career. As far as dirty and stupid goes, there are a couple other interpretations I could come up with, for example, dirty plus stupid could equal, Danger, do not stand near unstable explosives for risk of going up with them, or When something looks too good to be true, it probably is"

He grinned at her as he made shot that came a couple hairs away from bending the laws of physics and said, "Course, where would be the fun without a certain amount of adrenaline rush?"

Could life be anymore exciting!thought Chinasa Afolayan or more affectionately known as ChiChi by friends and family. The fact her family was in Nevada and she Seattle was just an added bonus. So many firsts had happened that she felt giddy and dizzy just thinking over all.

First job and what she considered an exciting job at that a Crime Scene Technician for the Crime Labs for the city of Seattle. First apartment and she had aunts and cousins as well as her parents from helping in the selection of location and decorating of it had been all her.

She straightened up from looking in her microscope and eased the knot in her back and then adjusted her lab coat to sit more squarely over her shoulders. The task was tedious looking and comparing evidence taken from the various arson sites to see what they could ascertain about the origin and cause of the fire. She took the slide out from its clamps and moved to get another sample thinking she would just sneak out and grab a coffee before looking at the charred bits again.

Time to get her head back on her job, she silently scolded herself and headed to the machine in the hallway change jingling in her hand. She nodded to several people as she walked by them humming happily thinking really only about that this was the first day of the rest of her life.

February 10th, 7:23 PM - Garage Billiards - Francis Wheeley

As soon as Jack said 'gimme a shot', a glass was in the customer's hand, and as soon as he'd said 'Jack', there was whiskey in it. Francis shrugged in response to his query. "I remember reading this thing about some company that would often put their stuff on sale. A lotta people'd say, 'but how are you gonna make any money when you're selling your stuff at seventy, eighty percent off?', but the guy that ran the company did a bunch of research into it and found out that when all of the stuff was on sale - even at such low prices - sales shot through the roof, and enough people would buy that they'd be able to make MORE money than they would on a normal day when stuff wasn't on sale. It's not like they did it all the time, just on occasions, but it still made enough of a difference that they did an article on it. Something about the fact that when it's on sale and for such a good deal, even if people don't need it right that instant, they'd still pick it up, just for the sake of the deal."

Francis scratched his chin and shrugged again. "I figured if it worked for that guy, it'd definitely work for booze. Now, as for THIS guy," he jabbed a finger at John, who'd just made a suspicious shot over at the pool table, "that is definitely who you think it is."

Francis looked around conspiratorially, then leaned over the bar, as if divulging some big secret. (Thom, who had been quietly listening to their exchange, leaned in as well. Francis paid him no mind.) "Some whispers you might hear around say that the reason he got sacked was 'cause there were...enhancements made to his game, if you catch my drift."

He stepped back with a 'what-are-you-gonna-do?' look, and marked up a receipt for Jack's tab so far. Stopping halfway through his writing, he looked up and laughed. "Hah! Sacked. I didn't even mean to do that. I love when things work out like that. Heh."

Jack gave Francis a smirk and tipped back the whisky once it was in his hand. He listened with full interest as the bartender laid out his plan to him. The business model sounded sound. Besides, Jack didn't know the first thing about running a business and this guy, if he did run Garage Billiards as well, seemed to be doing quite well. The shot of fire ran through him and Jack cringed. JD always got to him, got into his veins. Jack hit Jack in a special way that he kind of liked. He placed the shot glass back in front of Francis. He turned away for a moment and licked his lips. He liked the place so far. He was close to positive that he'd be back in the place more often now that he'd finally checked it out. He leaned in when Francis told him about John. He thought he might of already had heard something about the 'roids, but he still grunted a laugh when the sack double entendre sunk in.

"That was a good one," Jack said while reaching for a napkin to wipe his lips. "I guess it's not too strange for a disgraced football star to be out with a pretty girl. He's probably got millions squirreled away somewhere. You'd think he'd want to go somewhere a little more secluded though. I mean for when he rages out and beats her to death later. But maybe that's just me being cynical. I never quite got over Benoit doing his whole fucking family. Think I could get a pepsi pal? I got to sip on something so I'm not tempted to follow the booze down the old familiar trails."

Jack watched the two play pool from behind his strange eyes. He thought he might of caught them glancing his way. He didn't think it was too strange. Maybe they recognized him, maybe they liked his suit, maybe they just smelled bacon. Jack didn't mind whatever it was.

Febuary 10th ,7:30 p.m.~~ Seattle PD

Something stirred in the back of her brain as she made her way towards the vending machine thinking a hot tea would be wonderful before getting back to her microscope. She took a deep breath and several scents caught her attention bringing an unsettled feeling in the pit of her stomach.

Her beast stirred and she pushed down hard as she put her change in the vending machine. Wererat her brain shouted but sheinstead of responding to that stimulas she pressed the buttons for her tea with a sharp jab and listened to the gears grinding inside the machine.

With a soft clunk the cup dropped on an angle and Chinasa found herself jumping back as the water and tea powder hit the tilted  cup and splattered onto the floor, followed by creamer powder and sugar adding to the mess hitting the floor and poring into the overspill tray.

“Damn!” cursed the youing woman as she looked for anything to help clean the mess the machine had caused, “That was all my change you possessed hunk of gears!” She drew back her foot and kicked it hard enough to leave a small dent.

She stalked to a nearby rest room and grabbed a large handful of paper towels and stomped back to the hall and started mopping up the spreading puddle of tea, water, sugar and creamer.

“It’s gong to be a long shift!” was muttered between her clenched  teeth, picking up the dripping sticky paper towel and with one hand cupped under the wad to catch drips made her way quickly towards a waste basket.

"It's all in the way you hold your mouth," a man said from behind Chinasa.  When she turned, she discovered a man of many contradictions.  He was dressed as a priest but there was a holstered gun at his hip.  He was carrying a police file but his ID read 'VISITOR'.  In his other hand were several quarters.

"Can I offer you a replacement in exchange for some assistance?  I'm looking for the lab and I don't know my way around down here very well."  He smiled, an open, friendly expression that might have at one point been very useful with women.   "I'm Father Marshall Sozio.  Apparently the religious title takes precedence.  I don't know how they managed to get around the issue with separation of church and state but it seems they did.  I'm attached to the preternatural crimes unit."

It was unlikely that he needed to introduce himself.  There weren't many in the police services that didn't know Father Domenic Sozio, catholic priest, federal marshal and vampire executioner for a three state area.

Chinesa jumped, when the voice spoke behind her, pupils dilating as she felt the beast in her awaken and roar its displeasure all in a heart beat. She turned slowly looking at the man a sweeping glance taking in gun and collar a smile forcing it’s way to her lips.

“Sorry Father you really startled me!” she said while calming herself  with a few deep breaths and looked at the cursed vending machine. “How you hold your mouth? I think it just likes hazing the noobs here!” Her eyes sparkling as she said this. The change clinking in his hand made her laugh and  she looked at her still somewhat sticky hand and sighed.

“I would offer to shake hands Father Sozio but I am afraid I am still sticky from cleaning up after the tantrum thrown by this machine. I am Chinesa Afolayan but my friends shorten that down to ChiChi. I am new here to the crime lab and it be my honor to escort you to the labs.” her smile now was bright and warm, her very white teeth flashing.

“I will accept a loan for now till we are in said lab and I can pay you back for my tea which I so truly desired”

February 10th ,7:30 p.m.~~ Seattle PD -Domenic Sozio

The priest chuckled.  "Pleasure to meet you , ChiChi.  In my experience, you have to tuck your tongue right up as tight into the corner of your mouth as you can get it, but it can't stick out the corner of your mouth," he said, demonstrating.  "I thih thu mahee wah oo may uh lu stu-id."

He dropped the coins into the machine and watched in utter disgust when the vending machine spit his cup out onto the floor and proceeded to spray black coffee all over his pants and shoes.

"Shoulda held the cup,"  he muttered in disgust.  "I know where the detectives hide their coffee maker,"  he said, looking at the brown puddle on the floor.  "I also know where maintenance keeps their mops and buckets."

In addition to the usual smells coming from Domenic, the distinctive metallic tang of silver could be detected.  It wasn't coming from his weapon, however.  It was coming from various places, most notably his neck and his sleeves.

February 10th ,7:35 p.m.~~ Seattle PD -Chinesa Afolayan

The sound of the cup hitting the floor had Chinesa giggling and shaking her head. “Maybe we should have ir exorcised Father..get rid of the darn things demons!” watching as the priest stepped back from the splashing black liquid. She shook her head and smiled..”Well I was hoping for tea but coffee will do if I must. I have never cared for it though..I never could figure out how something that smells so heavenly can taste so nasty!”

She laughed and nodded “Lead the way to mop buckets and coffee I will help clean the mess up and then I must get back to work but as I will be heading to the lab we can go there together.”

Chinesa followed the priest as he made his way to the hidden treasure of mop and coffee maker.

“I also think that I will be buying myself a kettle for here..rather then depend on that cursed machine!”

February 10th, 7:30 p.m.  - -  Seattle P.D.  - -  Daniel

He wasn't sure if the girl was over confident or simply ignorant of what a pyrokinetic might actually be able to do.  "Would you be willing to sit with a sketch artist and see if you can come up with a composite of the man you saw?"  Daniel continued to write out what the girl had said as he asked that last question.  He was sure that both of the women wanted to leave as soon as possible but he still had to type of the Rats statement and have her sign it, provided she was willing to sign it that is.

February 10th, 7:23 - 7:40  p.m.  - -  Shale's car on the way to the Wolf Preserve  - -  Shale

After they all slid into the car and had their belts secured Shale started the car and pulled out of the lot.  Heading towards the Preserve she drove a good ten miles under the speed limit to make sure that the weather would not be an issue with safety.  She had to take a couple of detours due to traffic accidents and un-plowed roadways which added even extra time onto the drive.  The tension in the car was almost palpable and Shale let her beast reach out and bath the others.  It felt soothing, almost motherly in its caress.  Shale wasn't sure how it affected Ryan and Troy but she could see the effects it was having on Tiny.

February 10th 7:25 pm - Outside Alderwood Mall - Ann

They were only a few blocks from the mall when Ann's phone went off and the shrill tones of Rat by The Automatics filled the air.  Ann's smile was almost amused.

"Yes, she's cute but she's out of your league,"  she said as she answered the phone.

"You don't know what my league is," said a male voice on the other end of the phone.  He sounded almost like he was pouting.

"Maybe not but I know what it isn't,"  Ann replied.  "What do you want, Don?"

"Nick wants you to head over to the police station and hook up with Lillia.  Heads up though.  She's got one of Astrid's rats with her and Nick wants you to bring her in.  Serious question; do you think you can do it alone or do you need back-up?"

Ann looked at Adalyn.  "Me, Lab Rat and a new rat bringing in one of Astrid's?"  Ann's look went from amused to feral.  "Piece of cake."

Adalyn could hear Don's hesitation, even through the phone.  "If you say so,"  he said.  "Call in if you need back-up."

"You and Mike will be playing cavalry?"  There was a note of derision in Ann's voice but it was tempered with affection.

"Fuck, no!  Logan and a couple of the others."

Ann chuckled.  "I'll let you know if I need help."  She flipped her phone closed and turned to Adalyn.  "Change of plans.  We're doing a pick-up from the po-po."

February 10th 7:25 pm - Outside Alderwood Mall - Adalyn

Adalyn lifted an eyebrow at the 'out of your league' comment. She wasn't sure who was on the other end of the line, but she could only guess that it was someone that was always the butt of one of Ann's jokes.

She tilted her head to the side and pretended not to hear most of the conversation that filtered over the line, the hint of hesitancy from the man on the other end causing her to look back at her sponsor.

"Right, sounds like this could be fun, or not," Adalyn said with a wrinkle of her nose. "I'm sure that the other Rodere's going to be chitteringly mad that we're talking to one of their rat's." she said looking to Ann to see if her observation was close to being right.

February 10th - 7:41pm  - The Road to Huntsville – Troy Dwyer

SUVs were something that Troy had always detested.Sure, she understood why Shale had one, she even thought it was a good idea for someone who had to drag around a bunch of mangy wolves to have a vehicle hardy enough to accept the challenge, but the whole concept of a Suburban Utility Vehicle was something that made her want to puke all over the designers expensive penny loafers.

This is what she was concentrating on as they cautiously made their way towards the pack's preserve. Her mahogany eyes scanned the interior of the vehicle and marveled at the luxury that your average soccer-mom obviously commanded for something to cart herself and her snot nosed kids around in. A small chuckle formed on her broad lips as she envisioned Shale as that soccer-mom and her other pack mates as her unruly offspring. She thought it was almost fitting, especially since her own knees were almost perpetually scuffed despite the valiant efforts of her wolvish immune system.

The caress of Shale's beast was at first calming and incredibly soothing, but within moments, it felt suffocating and cloying. She struggled and shifted in her seat and once a again the bile rolled in the pit of her stomach, threatening to make the leap into her throat. Fortune had smiled upon the young wolf as they rolled into the preserve just before the point where her her already empty stomach would attempt a second purge.

She thumbed the seat-belt to release it and sprang from the moving car, running at full speed as her feet hit the snow. She came close to managing to keep pace with the vehicle, only letting it slip a few meters ahead of her before it pulled to a rolling stop to park and unleash it's passengers.

The grin had returned to her freckle dusted features as she sprinted to catch up and she danced around her fellow wolves in a tangible excitement, "C'mon, peoples, let's go, go, go!!!""

February 10th - 7:50pm  - Jonah's Home - Jonah

Not far off the waters, about two-in-a-half miles from North Beach Trail, on the edge of a seemingly quiet neighborhood lived a fox lycan with nothing but a cat... yes a cat, to keep him company. behind his home was the water and around it was trees. It was a great spot for a fish loving fox to hunt on night of full moons. Though a snob at times, and often busy, he was never to occupied for a little gaming at his computer. However, he was feeling kind of antsy. He took the time to get off of the games to research the upcoming trial. Had it begun? Was there an uproar of hate? How did it affect him? All he knew was that it was a big deal. But there was something else he wanted to know about. He wanted to see if he could find out more about that cereal killer. That was something that really could affect him. A little while later, he went out back to get some fresh air near the waters edge at the end of his property. [A post to show I am still interested]

February 10th 7:25 pm - Outside Alderwood Mall to Police Station - Ann

"Rats have big ears, so I'd advise you to keep your trap shut unless you're certain you're not going to be overheard,"  Ann said stiffly.  "Tipping off the opposition would be a bad plan.  Know what I mean?"

The reproach was the last thing the Alpha rat said until they were almost to the police station.  "I fucking hate these guys,"  she said, her Beast roiling.  "Why the Hell did Lillia have to find a rat that was a rat fink?"

February 10th 7:30- To the Police Station- Adalyn

The young rat took the tongue lashing from her sponsor with a good amount of grace. She wasn't used to a city having multiple roderes, and truly didn't know the layout of the territory for each group all that well. "I'll keep that in mind," she finally said sounding contrite.

She cut her eyes over to Ann and smiled as she grumbled about hating the cops and why did the girl they were going to go pick up have to find a rat fink. "I don't know why she found the snitch, but it could be that your Lillia is like my old rodere's mama Selena, couldn't help but take care of the weak ones." She said as they entered the building.

"So where do we go to pick them up?"

February 10th - 7:41pm  - Pack Preserve

"We need to wait for the others," Ryan said.  "Technically Tom should lead the hunt but I don't see why we can't do a little sniffing around while we wait."  He reached out an unconscious hand and rubbed Shale's shoulder before he began stripping.  He didn't bother pulling off his socks before shifting into wolf form.  He presented a hilarious figure, a full grown wolf wearing socks on its hind legs, running around in the snow.

Tim didn't say anything.  He too shrugged off his clothes and took his lupine shape.  He didn't sniff the ground the way Ryan did.  He held his nose high, sniffing the wind for a moment, before letting out a howl that conveyed every ounce of his grief, his loss and his guilt.

It was echoed by several human throats, as other vehicles began arriving in twos and threes.

We've run into another one of our bog down points.  This seems to happen quite frequently.  I'm thinking part of the problem is too many different micro-threads.  Any suggestions on how I get everyone on the same page at the same time?

The police advisory board combined all the elements, cops, shifter and other oddities.  Is there any other ideas as to how to get people rping?

Maybe be a little more brave and less dependent of you. I, myself, worry to much about over stepping and pissing you off That and I am stuck on weather or not to post for Tristan since his char sheet is missing. Maybe big event or maybe help push others to the same time as the rest and then some coaxing to get people where you want them. It's a pain being the dm huh? Hmm. A push forward in time could work but that depends on the others. You could ask people come up with a way to get their chars to a time and place if needed or maybe just a time. It may take a while for people are often busy and depended on someone to guide them. I know I tend to be some times. But that is partly because I am timid about not overstepping or scared my ideas would suck and have to rewrite them. But I do have an idea on Tristan. It involves a creation like I did with Jonah an npc that is.

you can always do a time shift and make it the day of the trial. If it is an open courtroom a lot of people could be in the crowd listening to the testimony of the witnesses. Then there is the pyro situation you set up with the rat-girl so there could be another board meeting to discuss that.
Title: Re: Anita Blake - Chapter 11: Living in Interesting Times

My favorite way of dealing with a bog down is the classic gloss over.  Its a summary that outline where everyone is and pushes them to where you need to be.  We do it a bit when we get sidetracked with unimportant things on a storyline.
Title: Re: Anita Blake - Chapter 11: Living in Interesting Times
Post by: Cassie on
it sounds like so far everyone is mostly on the same page. A time shift as Arwyn like stat; a gloss over like Darkflame stated. If everyone else agrees I would be for that too. Hell I am for that anyway.

Okay.

Give me a quick rundown of what your characters would be doing over the next three days.  Do it by PM and I can sort out all the who and what and I can post it so that everyone will be, in this case literally, on the same page.
