Title: Weapons of Mass Destruction - Learning from the Master (Chapter 2 Night shift)
Post by: Maxx on
Department 7 - The Danger Room - 9:00 PM  - Major Talbot

He looked like a drill instructor, with a pair of polished black combat boots beneath olive fatigues and a matching wife beater.  He was impressively built and authority seemed to drift away from him in waves.  Behind him was a table almost groaning under the weight of a wide variety of firearms.

"Nice to see you all managed to be on time," he said, addressing the assembled group of agents, new and old.  "I'm not expecting military discipline but there are a few things I do expect.  I expect courtesy.  When someone else is talking, keep your trap shut.  If you have a question, raise a hand.  It's not just something you did in school.  It works in real life as well.  I expect you to do what you are told.  You are not part of the military establishment but I outrank you here, as do director Faust and special agent Tanaka.  Within your ranks, the senior agents also need to be respected and obeyed.  Malone, Chyuu and Dingo have been there.  Learn from them as well.  I'm sure each of you has your own special talent and when time permits you will be given time to share that talent with the others.  Right now, however, it is my time to share one of my special talents with you.  I want you, one by one, to come up here and chose a firearm from the table.  Pick anything you want.  I'll be watching to see what you pick and how you handle the weapon.  We'll start with you, Redding."

Michael started.  He limped forward and stopped at the table.  He looked over the selection for a moment before picking up a black snub nosed revolver.  He slipped it into the pocket of his suit jacket, then went back to his place in line.

"Dingo."

Nicky smirked and sauntered up to the table.  He didn't hesitate.  He picked up a sawed off double barrel shotgun, broke it and looked down both barrels before closing it and returning to the group.

"Anderson."

Paul, like Michael, jumped when Talbot called on him.  He walked forward and, goggle eyed, took a long look at the table.  Three times he reached out, before changing his mind.  The first weapon he chose was an enormous sniping rifle but it proved heavier than he expected, so he returned it to the table.  The second was a chromed .357 magnum with a ten inch barrel, which he also weighed before putting it back where he'd found it.  Finally, with a look at Talbot to see if he were running out of time, he picked up a Striker shotgun with a folding stock and a large drum magazine.

"Now that Anderson has finally chosen, in the interest of saving time, come on up at your own pace and chose a weapon,"  Talbot said.  "Let's go, people.  We haven't got all night.  Once this lesson is over, the director is putting you to work."

Department 7 Headquarters - The Danger Room  9:01 pm - Samuel

Once the invitation was given, Samuel didn't hesitate. He strode up to the table and chose the weapon he was most comfortable with, a 10mm semiautomatic handgun. It was clear he had handled firearms before as he checked the clip, locked the slide and checked the chamber before returning back to the others with the firearm in his hand to the side, although he seemed to give a bit more distance between himself and the other people holding firearms than he did to the unarmed members.

Department 7 Headquarters - Common Room  9:03 pm - Destiny

The muster by Major Talbot had Destiny wishing she had died rather then spending the night being woken up every few hours in the infirmary to answer the same questions over and over. Who was she? Where was she? How did she get there? She had been told that to expect some memory loss and the fact that she would have a feel of disorientation for a week or so but all in all she had gotten of lightly. Her right forefinger reached up and poked at the bruise on her forehead and winced lightly. She listened to the Major carefully and felt her teeth start to chew her lower lip which she forced herself to stop as she had not expected boot camp.

When Samuel returned she stepped forwards and moved o the table looking at the weapons with a coolness that said she was not unfamiliar with guns. She selected a Browning 308 hunting rifle checking the breech and that the safety was on. She then checked the sights looking down them and along the barrel the stock raised but not pressed o tightly into her shoulder.

She then stepped away from the table quiet as a mouse and went back into her place in line with the rifle lowered and pointed at the floor. She waited to watch what the other people chose not certain what her choice said about her but she was use to hunting rifles maybe the one advantage of growing up in the bush by most people's thoughts anyway.

Department 7 Headquarters - Danger Room  9:01 pm - Kyoko Chyuu

Kyoko looked at the table stacked like an armoury and wished that she had her gun. A twin would have to do,  her blue tipped fingers wrapped around a Glock 9mm, the hand gun fit in her hand like any gun would, but didn't match it like hers did, a twin, but not identical. She tested the weight, checked the cartridge, the barrel, testing the slide and the spring before closing her up. returning the safety and taking the gun back to the group.

Looks around totally unsure what to do.  She heard the man tell them all to grab weapons.  Raising her hand sheepishly, "Um sir um...what do you think I should use?"  She was unsure and really didn't want a weapon.  But this was all new territory and she best learn quickly.  "Is this some kind of initiation?" Again uncertainty played across her young face.  Her fingers played across her favorite green shirt and wished she was back on the streets with her friends.

"If you'd clean the left over cheese out of your ears, you would have heard me say that it was a test," Talbot said.  "If you can't choose, then don't choose.  Or just pick randomly.  At least one person has chosen in a manner that was pretty close to random."

Paul blushed furiously.

Tabby had never even picked up a gun before let alone shot one, not even those ridiculous plastic guns on video games.  She took a quick look at what was displayed on the table.  The only thing she was sure of was she wanted something small, compact, lightweight and easy to conceal.  Her eyes alighted on several options but her hand curled around another almost without conscience thought.  It was definitely small, compact and would be easy to conceal in a pocket or a waistband.

Akira walked into the room and kept her place at the door way as she watched the new recruits pick out their weapons. She waited until she caught the Majors eye and gave him a nod. "I have to inform you that Agent Walker will be late attending this class. Due to his dietary needs he has had to leave the premises to get something to sustain him for the day. Please excuse his absence."

A look of pure anger washed over the small girls face.  Teeth crunching began for a few seconds as she glared at the man in front of her. "You may "outrank" (more spat out then spoken) me or anyone else here, but that does not give you the right to treat us like dogs.  I am new here and you can go bite yourself!" she was fuming, uncertain, and nervous as the feel the heat starting to rise inside of her.  "I wanted advice you mongrel!" she felt like smacking him harshly.  Her green eyes blinked back tears.  She didn't understand what was expected of her and truly she didn't know.  Looking down at the table, she didn't even recognize what was there.  She had never seen such weaponry in her entire life.  She reached down and picked up a beretta with a scope on it.  The look of anger never leaving her for at least four minutes and then she stepped back behind the others.  The beretta was small enough to be concealed, yet would do enough damage to knock someone down.   Although not sure what to do with it or even how to shot it properly, she shoved it in her pants and looked around sheepishly watching the others.  She distasted violence but she supposed she had to deal with protection.  Being new to the group, she doubted any one would protect her if it came down to it.  Besides she wasn't sure that bullets would even work on vampires.

Department 7 Headquarters - The Danger Room  9:06 pm - Vesper Novak

Once most of the team had taken their cues, Vesper slowly followed, eyeing the well laid-out multitude of mostly-black machinery set upon the table. He chewed his bottom lip as he looked them over, picking up a few and weighing them out as he'd seen Paul do. It was quite likely that of the numerous agents lined up today, the young Eurasian werewolf had perhaps the least extensive knowledge of weaponry. Every piece he'd picked up had been based entirely on aesthetics, aside from one he recognized as some newer make of an old Russian sniper rifle he'd seen a few times in a photo of his grandfather.

After some quick considerations, Vesper decided on a weapon he regarded as a safe middle-ground between the lighter arms and the heavy artillery spread out on the table. Its eight or nine pounds meant  it would be something of a small task to carry it, but in the moment the werewolf found its burden something of a comfort, the weight of the cool metal and plastic assault rifle representing some unspoken attestant to its strength. To the artillery-ignorant  young male, there was no other reason he could really give for his choice other than it simply felt... right.

Some amongst the group would recognize the weapon Ves had chosen as an AK-103, though most would mistake it for its predecessor, the AK-47. As he returned to the ranks, all Vesper knew it as was the shiny, phallic thing he'd now have to carry around.

((OOC: Is it the common room or the danger room we're in? Cause I know we started in the danger room. Also: School is silly! Let's eat it!))

Department 7 Headquarters - The Danger Room  9:07 pm - Talbot

The major didn't even dignify Demona's outburst with an acknowledgement, let alone a response.  "It's fairly obvious who has handled a weapon before and who hasn't," Talbot said.  "For those of you who didn't know they were supposed to check, none of these weapons have ammunition.  This situation will continue until such time as I feel comfortable enough with your ability to allow you to load the weapon.  Dingo, Chyuu, Keme and Jacobson, I have confidence in your ability and I will be seeing each of you on the firing range to see exactly how good you are.  The rest of you, I will be going over firearm safety with you.  There will be a test.  A passing grade is 100%.  If you pay attention and respect the firearms, you will pass on the first attempt.  If you fail, you will go through the course again and you will continue to do so until you can achieve a passing grade.  I have eleven different versions of the test, so copying your neighbour or trying to remember the answers will not help you.  Are there any questions?"

Department 7 Headquarters - Danger Room 9:06 p.m. - Molly Malone

The vampire known variously as Krickett, Molly and a few other names by the longer tenured agents, strode forwards once all but the missing 'Walker' had made their choices. She was dressed for combat in army fatigues the pants, hanging low on her hips, a ribbed wife beater t-shirt in a olive drab tie dyed pattern, pants tucked into the top of her combat boots. The variety of weaponry was looked on fingers tracing over different guns like a woman would stroke a lovers face.

A 22 snub revolver was pocketed then a 45 and a 9mm pistol all in various pockets that the pants offered. She shouldered several rifles along with an AK47 and  headed back to her spot in line. She chuckled happily "A L.A.W.S rocket or one of them .50 calibur sniper rifles is about all one might be desiring now Major..but I will just have to be asking Father Christms I suppose"

She took the same lazy lounging yet alert stance she had since the crew had been mustered eyeing the instructor with an almost predatory gleam in her eyes."Ask me again to yer party Major ye do bring the best favors ever!" Molly waited for what was to come the tingling feel of the were blood she had ingested when she had bit Talbot still having her needing to well do something if that involved killing or destroying something all the better.

"one weapon, Malone,"  Talbot said.  "It's a test.  I want to see what you would pick if given only a single choice.  You'll get your chance to play later."  A wry smile briefly flitted across his lips.  "Might I also point out that your name is not on my safe list as of yet?"

Department 7 Headquarters - Danger Room 9:09 - 10:00 p.m. - Talbot

The rest of the hour was spent covering over basic firearm safety.  Despite the fact that he was a Get of Fenris werewolf, Talbot proved remarkably patient.  He didn't mind answering questions, expanding his answers until whoever was asking was satisfied.  He had no issues with lack of knowledge.  Lack of attention, however, he was critical of.  As long as the class put in an effort he was satisfied.  He watched critically as the weapons were all returned to the table.

"We will continue again tomorrow," he said.  "There will be a test to see how much you remember.  I will turn you over to the capable hands of director Faust, who has your next task for you."

Heinrich smiled.  "The task I have for you this evening is potentially dangerous but with everyone's co-operation, I'm sure we will complete it without incident.  I realize some of you are without experience in this field but now is your opportunity to start gaining it.  Is everyone willing to take part in your first mission?"

Department 7 Headquarters - The Danger Room  10:01 pm - Samuel

Samuels feelings on Major Asshole had ranged primarily from mild irritation to dangerously angry but Professor Asshole was a different beast. This asshole as efficient, effective and almost engaging. He paid attention to the instructor even though he knew the information already. It was part of his job to attend orientation and training classes and he took pride in his work. The rest of his mind paid attention to his classmates. These would be the people who, for better or worse, who would be standing at his back holding a loaded weapon.

When the class was over and El Jefe addressed them he was somewhat surprised. He hadn't expected everyone to be turned loose in the field until much later. He was both curious and excited at the idea but didn't put a lot of hope into it being an exciting mission since most of this crew was so green. He gave a not-quite-smirk, nodded his head to indicate his ascent and glanced around to gauge the reaction of his new teammates.

Green eyes fluttered over the oddballs in the room.  She wasn't sure who was what or even how to distinguish what to look for.  She stood back from the rest of the group mainly watching.  Her hand shook from the news of learning that she didn't check for bullets.  A look of a question filtered over her face but she would not ask that jackal anything.  Green eyes twinkled with worried but she tried to keep a straight face.  She even bit her lip hard enough to make it bleed, trying to decide what to do or who to even talk too.  Finally she just backed into a corner and sat down trying to make herself obscure as much as she could.  She didn't know anything or anyone, so what could she really possibly do!  None of these people even seemed concerned with being present in the same room with me.  Fear seemed to grasp her and for just a moment, she thought about making a break and running as hard and fast as she could.

Department 7 Headquarters - Training Room  10:30 pm -

The small figure that stepped through the whooshing door to the training area leaned against the wall as Commander Talbot explained things. The young girl looked to be maybe twelve to fourteen years of age.  Her dark storm cloud colored eyes examined the room and she cocked her head curiously to one side as she studied the new recruits. Some of the people she recognized from the night before. The young girl in the corner with the red hair was new.

The pale youth twirled a long lock of her ravens wing black hair in between her fingers and rubbed one of the curled taunt locks of hair across her lips admiring the sensation as she processed what she saw. The girls aura was a wash of colors. Yellows ripping into oranges and vibrant violets and touches of light green flared though her aura.

That however wasn't what interested Babadora. The young girl smiled as she saw the wild and telltale colors of black and red that rippled and shifted into each other that clung to skin and which the other colors danced over. The tell tale colors that  Nicky, Commander Talbot, the new recruit Tabbatha, and Novak all shared with the new red head. It meant she was a werewolf like them.  Finally another teenager and a girl, lets hope shes nothing like Agent Darkheart was...

Babadora let go of the hair she was rubbing over her lips, tempted to gently chew on her still damp hair. It wasn't professional at all to do that... but little minor things like that helped her think and process better sometimes.  She let her delicate hands smooth out her dress and she straightened the cute pink cardigan she wore over her dress before standing at attention. "Commander Talbot sir, if you are done your basic training for the evening may I borrow the new recruits? Director Faust would like me to guide them down to the briefing room for their first mission of the evening...

The lesson was over as Talbot waved them out Babadora softly looked up at her new coworkers. "This way to the briefing room. We will discuss the full game plan with the entire team." She said as she motioned for the others to come out into the hall and proceed to the briefing room most would know where it was with the tours she had given. The newest addition was anyone's guess. She offered the redhead a smile "Come on Agent lets go. They must have brought you over while I was sleeping. Whats your name?" she asked inquisitively. After all, it was good to know who your team members were and hearing that new guy you know the new guy yeah him he fell down a well and needs your help, just didnt work as well as having a clear and quick name to know her members by.

Heinrich smiled.  "It seems I have grown invisible," he said.  "For those of you who haven't met her, Babadora is one of our senior agents.  Do not let her appearance fool you.  Among her many talents, you will find that she is a skilled surgeon.  More than one of our current staff owes their life to her ability.  She will be leading one half of the mission this evening."

Heinrich's eyes, the blue of a cold October sky, settled on Talbot for only a moment.  "Agent Dingo will be leading the other half.  If you will all follow Babadora to the briefing room, I will go over the details of the nights objectives."

"Follow the leader," Nicky said, the smirk on his face echoed in his voice.  "Time to play."

Kyoko chuckled as she followed Nicky and Babadora out towards the briefing room. A bit of concern flit past her mind though, the new recruits really hadn't been formally trained yet. Department 7 Headquarters - The Danger Room  10:30 pm - Samuel

Samuel wore a slight smile as he headed towards the door. This was turning out to be a pleasantly surprising experience. He still doubted there would be anything interesting in the actual field but everything so far had turned out to be a surprising mixture of what he hoped would happen, tension at what had happened and delight at things that he hadn't imagined happening, so he kept a small hope in check that the mission might be something surprising as well.

He gave the timid young red-head he hadn't met a wink and smiled encouragingly at the Medium, Damnit, he should remember her name by now. He'd tried to visit her late the previous night, though she'd been asleep, before giving a nod to Dingo and the young adolescent vampire he'd met the night before.

He gave a quick, mischievous eyebrow wiggle at Mistress Boxers, the woman with the enchanting accent he had met the night before, as he passed her. He wondered at Grandmother's vision and his role in what was going on here. From past experience he knew that her visions were rarely something that would be pleasant but he also knew that if things played out according to her visions, something profound would happen to alter his perceptions of the world. And that must be a good thing, right? He knew better than to be that confident. He also knew that for better or worse, he would grow as a person if he survived it.

Department 7 Headquarters - The Danger Room  10:30 pm - Vesper Novak

Vesper rolled his shoulders back and stretched in one smooth, languid motion, his face vacant and eyes closed. Training had gone well! What the youth had lacked in knowledge, he certainly made up for in attentiveness. His eidetic mind committed every instruction, every motion, every casually thrown word he was fed during the session to memory. Everything was promptly sorted and stored effectively in his mind for future use.

He smiled - the same relaxed, unexpressive look his easy features always bore - as he eyed his coworkers. One in particular continued to catch his attention again and again as he had the previous evening - Samuel. Or as Vesper's mind, poor with names, had come to call him, the "prekrasnaya koshka-chelovek" - lovely cat man. As the group was at last instructed to continue to their next destination, Vesper opted to follow the older male to whom he was so drawn. But while his feet were synched to Samuel's path, following him easily, his eyes had slowly wandered toward someone else.

Vesper had noticed her earlier - someone newer than the others, someone apparently Garou. The girl was green-eyed and auburn-haired and younger than most present. If nothing else, her apparent timidity intrigued the twenty-two-year-old's inner scientist. So, casually, he strayed from Samuel's path as quickly as he had begun to follow it and circled back to the young girl.

"Do you want to walk together?" He asked casually, extending a hand to her.

Department 7 Headquarters - Common Room  10:31 pm - Demona

Demona was unused to anyone trying to get close to her.  None of these people knew her, yet they where trying to be her friend.  It was unsettling to her.  She gave a brief tentative smile as the teenager walked in.  Finally someone close to her age!  Cocking her head to one side, she tried to envision what was really going on.  Small nostrils flared as more people entered the room.  She was curious, scared, and yet inspired by the waft of the girl that entered the room. It took a few moments for the girl to realize that she has asked a question, green eyes widened in embarrassment "Demona is my given name or Demon when I am angry." trying to act a bit tougher than what she was. She even give Babadora a tentative smile as her fears began to ease a little.

As Samuel winked at her, a bright flush crept over her face.  She was unused to older men doing that to her.  It was unsettling for sure.  Yet intriguing at the same time. Instantly she let her head drop and closed her eyes trying to cover up the fact of her redden checks.

As Vesper closed in on her, she felt the redness fade away instantly.  Something about the lad caused her to back up.  Unsure of the reasons for his friendliness, she shook his hand with uncertainty, yet with a flare of warmth at the same time.  She had so many questions to ask and really needed answers.  Casually she slipped his arm around his hand and walked beside him.  She was so much smaller than Vesper, she looked like a child beside him.  Slowly she bent closer, "Why do you make me so nervous?"

Vesper walked along with the smaller Garou, leading her along the path outlined by the other agents in front of them. When the auburn-haired girl finally spoke up, he looked to her with an inquisitive stare. "I inherited my mother's eyes," he replied without hesitation. The smile had vanished from his face and was replaced by blank canvas, void of emotion, "I can understand. She made me nervous, too."

Though he said it with great certainty, it was difficult to know specifically what about the boy had made Demona nervous. But Vesper did have one thing right: he had most certainly inherited his mother's eyes. The same cold look, calculating and measuring, dominated Vesper's own gaze as it had his now-deceased mother's. And with the raven-haired male's smile absent and his eyes alight with the prospect of another strange yet familiar coworker to become acquainted with, they claimed supremacy over his countenance.

"I was wondering something as well, though," the Bonegnawer continued quite suddenly, "Why do you intrigue me?"

Kyoko let out another chuckle, this one a little more amused than the last as Samuel sent an eyebrow wag her way. The were-fox vollied with an eyelash flutter and a faux-southern belle swoon. She had long ago realized that her appearance and accent warranted a certain amount of intrigue and male attention, and though she'd come accustomed to it, it always amused and befuddled her. Samuel was of course attractive, languid in his movements and chizelled in feature, but despite that there was even something primal and delightful about his aura and it showed when she felt her cheeks flush inexplicably. Really? She looked away from the arch of his shoulder, and the group at large. She put a cool palm to her flushed face hoping no one took notice. Nicky would have a field day.

Paul leaned over to Crickett, who was still currently Molly.  "I'm glad I'm on this side of the room.  I don't have a clue what he's talking about."

He gave a nod to Dundee as he passed through the door, What the hell was his name. He tried to remember, he appreciated the unexpected support he got from the wolf, although he realized it probably had more to do with the rivalry between him and Major Asshole than any feelings for him but it was still something that surprised him and he had been unlike what he'd been led to expect from any wolf, although Major Asshole was pretty close to the mark. Nike? No, that didn't sound right, he'd have remembered if he were named after a shoe.

He gave a brief smile of encouragement to the Spirit-talker as they were separated according to were and non-were.

When Dundee spoke, asked his question his ears almost literally twitched in his direction. He was familiar with the spirit world, Grandmother interacted with it all the time. He'd also been told of the Umbra but had never dealt with it personally, although his teacher had a spirit she dealt with regularly and he knew something of the rituals the Bastet used to deal with it. He also had the impression that the Bastet had been much closer to it some time in the distant past but the connection had been made much more tenuous around the time the Wars of Rage had occurred. Probably something else the dogs had denied them in an act of spite, he thought grimly.

He raised an eyebrow and nodded to Dundee, "I know some", he said cautiously, "but I'm no Shaman, either." He might have said more, the curiosity was so strong, but he was also reluctant to let them know exactly what he knew, or how he knew it. He had no intention of sharing with the wolves, especially Major Asshole, anything that might lead them to suspect anything about the other Bastet.

She pulled away from him unsure how to take his words.  Her green eyes shimmered with barely held back tears as she took a deep breath to steady herself.  The rise and fall of her chest was apparent with the rapid quick beats of emotions that whirled within in.  This man drew her like a flame to a moth.  She was scared of him. Yet she also needed him.  She was so small in statue, yet her spirit was strong.

The words shape-shifters to the right filtered through her thoughts and she stood rock still.  She was not sure what she was..hesitation was written on her face. Her green eyes shimmered with fear, remorse, intrigue, and uncertainty.  The paleness of her face seemed to darken suddenly.  A flush of red filtered over her quickly as she felt the urge to run. Something in the room made her feel sick. She didn't know who or what, but the feeling of utter terror filled her.  Green eyes jerked from face to face trying to figure out what it was.  Panic seemed to engulf her and she stepped back further into the corner.

Department 7 Headquarters - The Danger Room  10:35 pm - Vesper Novak

"Maybe you are. But that would make sense. It seems like all of us here are," Vesper said, his fathomless black eyes meeting her shimmering green as he tilted his head casually to one side, "So at least you're in good company."

Once Nicky (who's name Vesper was still trying desperately to recall) had announced the organized segregation of their group, the young Garou made to move toward the right side of the room, but he hesitated. He saw Demona's sudden loss of momentum, her eyes filling up with fear and uncertainty and panic. The older shapeshifter looked quizzical, entirely unsure of how to register her sudden but subtle display of emotion. They both seemed frozen for a moment, her in her fear and he in his fascination. Then, without much warning, Vesper took Demona's hand in his firm but gentle grasp and, with his very best comforting smile painted across his sharp features, lead her toward the right side of the room with him without a word. Even once he'd lead her there, he didn't let go.

Upon hearing Nicky's ask for a show of those whom were familiar with the spirit world, Vesper lazily rose his free hand above his head. He'd certainly heard of the umbra. Both his father and twin sister had spoken of it to him several times, though Vesper himself had never ventured into the mysterious astral plane. It had remained to him something of a fairytale since his father's death, and so the prospect of finally exploring this separate realm excited the Bonegnawer intensely (even though his body language hardly spoke of his underlying anticipation).

Demona nearly cried out when the lupin grabbed her hand. She had never allowed anyone to touch her in such a fashion.  For some strange reason, instead of pulling away she allowed him to escort her in the room.  She felt somewhat safe in his grasp.  It was the first time that she truly felt comfort in another's embrace. Softly she laid her head on his broad shoulder and just listened to his heart beat.  While her very heart beat so loudly, she thought everyone could hear it.  A sigh of content left her lips as she peered upwards for a moment.  Turning red, she looked down and tried to listen what was being said.  She had so much to learn and really didn't think this was time to make friends.  Besides sooner or later she would be gone and no one would even miss her.

The Australian's pale blue eyes found Demona. "I know it's a lot to take in in a short time.  It's all a blur right now but it will make sense eventually.  Just relax and go with it."  He chuckled.  "Trust me, Love.  We wouldn't drag you through Hell on a first mission.  There will be some danger but this time out your job is to be a extra pair of eyes.  We're going to step sideways, into the spirit world or as it's known to most Garou, the Umbra.  It's a little crowded out there right now because of the wards that protect this place.  Our job is to keep a careful eye out for anything trying to get in once we open the doors to let everyone out."  He looked over at Heinrich Faust.  "In a nutshell."

"Close enough for our purposes,"  Heinrich said, nodding.

Tabby had heard of the Umbra from a couple of different sources but didn't really know much about it so she kept her mouth shut and her hand down.  She started to feel the beginnings of a good adrenaline rush as her anticipation started to rise. "Just what sort of 'things' are we supposed to be on the lookout for?" she stressed the word things as she spoke.

"When we take down the wards that are trapping the spirits inside, there should be a mass rush to escape," Heinrich replied.  "We want to make certain that all the spirits leave, so that when we rebuild the wards, there will be nothing left inside that does not belong inside.  Additionally, we want to make sure that nothing else enters.  The trapped spirits are shapeshifters, for the most part Black Fury werewolves.  They won't be able to hurt you but they will give the males a hard time while leaving the females alone.  There are other types out there as well, so don't assume that you won't have a pissed off ghost screaming in your face until the wards go down."

Heinrich smiled.  "You will also have to watch for things scuttling in amidst the exodus.  If it's small and gets missed, I doubt it will be an issue.  Anything worth worrying about is going to be like a beacon.  Things with power stick out, so if you need to see it, you'll be able to see it."

The morning had been soothing in many ways to Destiny the time shooting had been so familiar that she had expected to find herself back at her Uncle's home the bush pressing in the possibility of stepping out of the house and finding a bear in your face very real. She gave her head a shake and smiled at Samuel as he apologized for not seeing her.

"It's okay" she murmured "I wasn't very good company last night"

She then trailed after the others the shields that had been placed about herself making the weight of trapped sols easier to bare though she had no idea what her part in this would be. When they entered the room she moved to stand somewhere between the shifters and the mages uncertain just what her part is. The feeling of the spirits still stirred in the back of her mind and she closed her eyes waiting to find out what she was to do.

"Colourful,"  Michael said, watching the werewolf go.

"Pointless," Talbot said.  "There are enough of us here that knows what we're doing that we could each take one through with us."

Samuel cocked his head and shrugged at the comments he heard. As he followed the others out he did have to admit that Dundee could be an entertaining character but didn't know enough personally about how to cross into the spirit world to judge if there were some potential issue with doing it this way. On the other hand, he was keenly interested in learning as much as possible about it. Hopefully, he could figure out how to do it for himself. He knew that among his people most of the older, more experienced were easily capable of doing it but that was not typical of the younger crowd, say his age, for example.

As he followed them a small smile appeared at the thought of his learning to cross now and the potential gain it would give him at the next gathering he could attend. He picked up his pace a bit to catch up with Dundee and get a position where he could observe closely how this worked.

The Australian Bonegnawer led the string of new agents on a long and winding trip through the compound.  At some point it became a conga line. He had them wave their free hand in the air and kick their feet until half of them were laughing.  It was only then that he had them close their eyes and headed straight towards the large wall mirror.

He didn't stop or turn when he reached it.

He stepped through it.

And the line behind him held followed him through.

He widened his stride slightly to get nearer the Australian when the conga line broke out. He laughed at the spectacle and trying to get into the spirit of it he took the opportunity to dance his way midway up the line when they entered the long hallway and Dundee asked them to close their eyes and keep walking.

He debated with himself if it was truly necessary closed his eyes or if it was more of Dundee's entertaining theatrics. He finally made himself close his eyes and follow the person in front of him. After a few moments of walking in a straight line he realized he still hadn't heard or felt any indication that the line was turning but he knew that couldn't possibly be right, there was a wall at the end of the hall and the front of the line should have turned by now, surely.

He struggled for a moment and finally decided he had to see what was going on and just before he opened his eyes he wondered if there was a reason he was supposed to keep his eyes closed and hoped this wasn't one of the times that curiosity killed the cat.

Then he opened his eyes to see what was happening.

Department 7 Headquarters - Through the Looking Glass  10:44 pm  - Nicky Dingo

The world that Samuel saw was a shadow of the world he had left behind.  The building that housed Department 7 was still there but as a twisted shadow of itself.  Several things were made perfectly clear in the image of the old building that existed on the far side of the mirror.  It was obvious that the building had been an asylum and that the mentally ill had not been always treated kindly there.  It was even more obvious that there had been a battle fought there recently and that the spirits of the dead were angry and hadn't quite given up the struggle.  The small group of travelers stood out against the battling dead because they glowed with their own life forces, while the dead were merely hollow images of their former selves, silent, empty things that had less substance than cobwebs.

"Open your eyes,"  Nicky called out as he swelled into his fully Chrinos form.  "Welcome to the spirit world.  The Umbra.  Dreamtime."  His voice was raised, despite the fact that he didn't need to shout over the din of the silent battle.  "Don't be afraid of the dead.  They can't hurt you.  They can't even touch you or notice you, which is a shame since I've wanted to bag some of these sheila's for years."  Nicky could have been referring to any number of the dead.  More than half of them were female and almost all of those were Black Fury werewolves.

"Pervert,"  Talbot said.  His voice a deep rumble.  "Set your sentries and let's get on with this."

Department 7 Headquarters - Through the Looking Glass and back again 12:01 am - Nicky Dingo

The shapeshifters spent over an hour in the Umbra and the spirits that were there reacted much the way Nicky said they would.  When the wards dropped, there was no immediate response from the shadowy figures but after a few minutes more and more of them discovered that they were no longer fettered to the area bounded by the wards.

There was less a mass exodus and more of a dissolution of the crowd until only the bright spirits of the living were within the boundaries of the department 7 headquarters.  A few minutes later, the wards went back up and Nicky led the new agents back into the real world.

"Let me know if you have any questions about what just happened,"  the Australian Bone Gnawer said. "If you don't have any, you're too bloody clueless to be allowed to live.  Anyone without questions or wanting to make a quick trip back out there can pay a visit to Talbot's room at three in the morning with a jug of ice water.  Just pour it on him.  That should get you back into the Umbra in a flash."

The Get of Fenris didn't bother to respond to Nicky's remarks.  "Well done for a first mission," he said.  "You showed discipline under trying circumstances and worked as a team.  Fortunately we didn't have any trouble out there.  Next time we might not be so lucky.  Now get some sleep.  We're back in the classroom tomorrow."

Tabitha wasn't sure she remembered the name of the name if the kid who grabbed holed of her right hand, but she was definite about the name of the person who had her left.  She was less then thrilled with the idea of having to hold Major Talbot's hand but was not about to show it.  The last thing she needed was to piss him off again, although being pissed off seemed to be his usual mood.  She couldn't help but smile and chuckle when Nicky had them doing a conga line and the hooky pokey to the limited extend that they could while holding hands.  When he ordered eyes closed she slammed her blue eyes shut till ordered to open them again.

Once her eyes were open it took Tabby a moment before she realized that things were not the same.  Two things became very clear very quickly,  that the world seemed to be a mere shadow of its self and it was very obvious that violence, a lot of violence, had taken place within the building that housed her new home.  She felt more then saw the wards drop and immediately was on alert for anything coming towards the group, as opposed to moving away from them.  She noticed a few things in the distance that sent shivers up and down her spine but nothing come close enough to worry about.  Once they were back into the real world and released from duty she headed straight to her room, a warm shower and bed.

"Considering the fact that Miss Jacobson wasn't in the Umbra with you, Mr Travers, I suspect she will have a little trouble relating," the director said.  "She was one of those who were forced to remain fixed in this realm to deal with things from this end.  She is also quite scattered at the moment.  She was forced to channel far more than her usual number of spirits, so she might not respond to you in the way you might expect."

"So what did happen out there?" Paul asked.  He still had his skateboard tucked under one arm.  "All I did was fetch chalk and paint and stuff like that."  He seemed envious of Sam's experience and quite oblivious of his interest in Destiny.

Department 7 Headquarters - The Real World  12:03 am - Vesper Novak

Vesper was practically buzzing with post-Umbra excitement. He had so many questions, but they stumbled over each other too rapidly in his mind for his mouth to get ahold of one. So instead he listened to the others, hoping one of his many questions would be answered by those around him. And if not, that a prolonged silence might allow his mind to sort itself out. He remained close to Demona out of what was for him some close approximation of concern for her well-being, and would continue to keep by her side until she chose to leave for the night.

Mere metres away from the others, Vesper inclined his head as he listened to Samuel - still known to Vesper only as "lovely cat man" - attempt some quick explanation to a strange young thing wielding a skateboard before he retired to his quarters. While he would have conceded that Samuel's answer was truthful and its enigmatic nature was purposeful, the answer was too cryptic to be satisfying to the skateboarder. Once Samuel had departed, Vesper offered his own opinion.

"It was…. beautiful. And frightening. What happened was…" The Bonegnawer spoke, almost as if telling a ghost story, "Hard to describe. There were many others, many dead, almost all fighting to be heard or seen. The wards lifted and they drifted away until it was silent. The wards closed in…. And we departed."

"It was all much more complicated than that, but… Those are all the words… The simplest words, at least, I can find to explain."

The corner of the elder boy's mouth twitched up at the youth's enthusiasm. This childlike demeanour of Paul's was more than welcome by the child-minded Vesper. It was refreshing. His question, however, confused the Eurasian werewolf as he leapt onto an unspecified topic, throwing off his wobbly-at-best conversational guard.

"What do you mean?" Vesper asked, his oft-blank expression warmed by just a hint of genuine delight. Paul may have been the upteenth person of interest he'd encountered today, but he was only the second to capture his attentions in a manner neither scientific nor physical.

Vesper's black eyes followed the skateboard, amused by the juxtaposition of such a conventional object in a place where so many extraordinary things had happened. The boy, too, carried the same contradiction - such an ordinary-looking boy… And yet here he was. And what was he? ... Who was he? Vesper watched with great intrigue as Paul glided around him on one set of wheels so wonderfully it must've been second nature, like he'd learned to do this before he'd began to walk.

"I would like that very much," he responded quietly in such a way that said quite clearly he was honoured by the invitation. He fished his Department-issued cellphone from his pocket as well as an old, folded-up piece of newsprint and a broken pencil. After re-checking the number on his phone, he scribbled his name and number on the piece of paper and handed it to the other boy.

"Call me with a time and place. Anytime, I am free. I will meet you there," Vesper explained "Until then, spokoynoy nochi-" he broke off as he meandered out of the room, realizing mid-sentence he still didn't know the other's name.
