Title: Anita Blake - Chapter 10 - When the Mighty Fall
Post by: Maxx on
December 23th, 7:15 p.m.  - -  Seattle PD - -  Father Domenic Sozio

It had been more than two months since the execution of the serial rapist vampire and the city had still not settled completely back into a state of relaxation.  It wasn't difficult to see why.

The vampires were trying to demonstrate that they had no connection to the visiting master but there were still occasional outbursts of violence towards those with fangs.  News had spread quickly about the execution but it was still not enough to stem the undercurrent of violence.  Nigel had been making a far greater number or public appearances, with Brandy and Waylon never too far away.

The werewolves had immediately started a legal motion to prevent Lobo from being executed for his part in the crimes.  Tom has assumed temporary control of the pack, pending the return of their true leader.  He had refused to replace Andrew, citing that it was the Ulfric who made such appointments.  There was a sullenness amongst the members of the pack.  Much of it aimed at Seattle PD.

The differing factions of rats were fractious to begin with but with Nick's bid to combine all the Rodere, there was additional tension.  Of the five that had existed when Nick rose to power, only two existed now, of roughly equal strength.  There was much speculation as to whether Nick, the rat king or Astrid, the rat queen would rule.  Nick's Rodere had been busily gaining ground financially and had announced plans for a school for infected children.  It hadn't gone over particularly well with the school boards or the politicians.  It had almost drawn attention away from the vampires.  Jules Chalice had offered to fund the whole thing but Nick had flatly turned him down, insisting that the school needed to be supported by the shifter community so that there would be no agenda other than the education of children.

The were leopards were doing their best to keep out of the public eye but Morvan was making it difficult.  He'd managed to avoid negative publicity but a desperate leap and a sudden grab on a construction site had turned him into something of local hero when he save the life of a father of four.  It had also eased much of the tension with the other worker.  He was still the wagon burning shifter newb but he was their wagon burning shifter newb.

The capture and execution of the rapist vampire had brought tremendous prestige to the Preternatural Crimes Unit, despite the fact they hadn't actually made the capture.  Their morale boost was short lived.  With the coming of November's full moon, Ben Rothwell, were lion and lectured had vanished.  He'd turned up again in early December, skinless and showing signs of being a victim of whoever had killed the were rats a few months earlier.  In addition to their regular duties, this last gruesome crime made connecting with the lycanthropic community even more vital.  An advisory board had been formed for just that purpose.

Domenic still wasn't comfortable with his new powers as a federal marshal but he was growing used to them.  He'd yet to fully reconcile the secular power and responsibility with those of his religious calling and the dual demands on his time were causing him an number of sleepless nights.  He realized this was likely going to be another one when the first few members of the advisory board entered the conference room.

December 23th, 7:15 p.m. -In route to an advisory board meeting- Jonah

While heading back to work for an advisory board meeting, the fox was making a mental note of what he would need to get the next time he had the chance to go to the store. Unfortunately, the fox ran into a little trouble. 'BAM!' The car jerked as the tire flapped against the road; almost causing him to wreck. He had to slow his car down and pull over to find out what had happened. Normally, he did not like to get out of the car in a place that was not all that familiar but he realized that it was possible that there was a flat. Grant it, he was familiar with the route do to it being his path to work, but he had never gotten out there before. Jonah could not help but stop for a moment to absorb his surroundings. It was almost like a little side adventure.

In spite the appearance of a spoiled teen whom was well groomed and naive, he was far from it. He even knew how to do basic maintenance on his car; it was HIS car after all. Jonah crouched down before the back, driver-side tire, he sighed heavily as he reached for a peace of the tire. "How the hell did this happen? I just replaced this tire...." In any rate, he did not hesitate to removed his blazer and good shirt so he could avoid as much mess as possible. After doing so, he made a call to his boss letting him know he was going to be late and his reason as to why. Like some, he had a white t-shirt on underneath. After putting said clothing in his car, he moved to the trunk and pulled out a jack, proper tool, and spare out in order to change said tire.

Jonah hated any form of manual labor, even something as simple as changing a tire, but he was not without the capability to do so. He also did not complain and wine about it. With a a strong huff, the slender, pretty little, fox got the jack ready to jack up his car. While raising the driver-side rear, he began to study the area again. He knew that there was a bit of chaos in the city and was trying to be cautious. He kept his lycan senses open while working on his car. This should not take long.

December 23th, 7:15 p.m.  - -  Seattle PD - -  Lillia

The conference room door was silent as it swung open to reveal the ghostly white visage of the small wererat as she peered inside, her pink lips pursed.  She blinks, seeing father sozio as the sole occupant of the room so far.  "Am I early?"  she asks as she comes in a bit shyly, brushing her hands over her pretty pink sweater.

"Only slightly,"  Domenic answered.  "I'm surprised to see the first person arriving only fifteen minutes early.  I suspect we'll be starting half an hour late."  he stood to greet her.  "Lily, isn't it?"

"Lillia, but close enough, since everyone seems to prefer calling me that.  How are you doing, Father?"  She smiles as she comes over to shake his hand.  "And are you expecting a lot of people?"

"This close to Christmas?"  Domenic chuckled.  "I'm overworked and I'm not exactly expecting a full house, as they say.  I've had one call in late due to a flat tire, so we likely won't be getting started until almost eight."

December 23th, 7:16 p.m.  - -  Seattle PD - -  Cynara

There was a knock on the door and the person on the other side didn't wait to be invited in, the knock was more of a warning that she was there, and to make it so she wouldn't walk in on any private conversations. Cynara had picked up the habit living on the ranch with so many other people. When you have superhuman hearing, it's hard to have privacy, so it was polite to at least warn people that you were coming so they had the chance to stop talking if they didn't want their conversation being overheard.
She walked into the room with an aura of self-assurance. The girl who had started her shifter life with no idea as to what was even going on, had not only now gotten used to what she was, she was happy with it. Many people tried to hide that they were shifter, and Cynara had attempted that at first, but she had given that up pretty quickly and embraced who and what she was. In time, she may have the potential to become an Alpha, she wasn't as of yet, but as she moved into the room, there was a power the radiated from her. It wasn't the same kind of power that swirled around Morvan, the power of an alpha, a true Nimir-Raj, the power that rolled around her now had more to do with her confidence and comfort in herself. She moved with the liquid grace of her animal form, and even a total null would be able to recognize it as not an attempt at a sexy saunter, although there was something very sexy about it, but more like the way a cat moves after it had caught the mouse and is now contentedly full, and purring to themself.
She smiled at the two people who were already in the room. It was a nice smile, not threatening, and not fake. Being included in this meeting meant something to her. It meant that Morvan trusted her and that he thought she could contribute something to the group.
Cynara pushed her hair, which now instead of being a bottled red colour and down her back, was a natural rich dark brown and cut in a long bob that framed her face, behind her ear and extended a hand to the priest.
"Father Dominic, it is good to see you again."

December 23th, 7:17 p.m.  - -  Seattle PD - -  Domenic

Domenic's reaction to the wereleopard's entrance was typically male, despite the clerical collar he wore.  There were some reactions he just couldn't control.  "Good evening, Cynara," he said, after she had taken a seat.  "Have you met Lillia?  She's here representing her Rodere, just as you are here representing your Pard."  It was likely that the two shapeshifters already knew what the other was, even before he spoke.  The introduction was to put them on equal footing and to let them know that he knew how to talk the talk, as well as being a gentle reminder that they were there representing all of their kind.  According to what he'd heard, there was considerable bad blood between these two breeds and he hoped that it wouldn't lead to trouble.

December 23th, 7:18 p.m.  - -  Seattle PD - -  Cynara

Cynara nodded and held her hand out to Lillia. "We have not had the honor of meeting in person, but I do know who you are. I have tried my best in my time here to get to know who the important members of all the known shifter groups are. Makes things easier." She offered the other woman a smile.
Cynara knew of the bad blood between the leopards and the rats, but she had not been part of the pard at the time, had not even been pard at all when the event occurred. She felt the pain that still lived in the pard after loosing so many of their kind, but the pain was not her own, and she tried to not blame the rats as a whole. To hate all the rats for something done in the past before she had even known any of her new family, was just another form of racism. And there was enough of that against shifters in general without her adding to it. She instead treated all the other shifters she met with respect, and a bit of caution.

December 23th, 7:15 p.m. - At the side of the road

"Having a little trouble, Foxy?" a voice called.  It came from downwind, so Jonah didn't even have a scent that he could use to identify the speaker.  He'd never heard the voice before, of that he was sure and there was a feral tone in it that not many vampires could duplicate.  it was a shifter of some description.

December 23th, 7:18 p.m.  - Seattle PD - Tristan Crow

When the vampire rapist was loose, Tristan spent much of his time hiding out in an old warehouse. He made sure that a master knew where he was and even made sure he was as respectful as he needed to be when he needed to be. He hid out there for a personal solitude and not out of a need to hide form his own kind. He also remained there to avoid confrontation. The pretty little vampire was about his survival alone. He only made a point to be around the others in order to feed. That particular vampire was a bit of a loner but not so much that he caused trouble.

However, Tristan seemed to find someone to talk to that he had not expected. There was a young girl, could not be any more then fifteen, that was being attacked. She and a couple of others lived in the warehouse. Tristan seemed to wind up rescuing her. After that, he would sit quietly while the human would carry one with some fascinating stories. He never once questioned why she was staying in the abandoned warehouse but seeing how those without homes were treated, made him ponder his own choices. He had wanted to do something and had heard somewhere that it was possible that the PD would accept volunteers. Volunteers did not seem like they would have to have the power that officers and detectives had but he figured he could try and do something.

However, the vampire was unaware of how things would work in that regard. He figured that assistance would mean having information to give. He also knew that the warehouse was generally a secret place for those on their own in the world. There were people literally hiding there for whatever reason. Tristan sat in the shadows of his own personal space while trying to figure out what he should do. Though, he had also heard that a priest was given some sort of position of power; some sort of marshal of something of the kind. He wondered if the priest could tell him what he could do. After all, priests were suppose to be honest and good nature.

After some of his own inquiries passed to some of those living in the warehouse, he heard all sorts of different stories. Some where a little spacey and others were possible but hard to believe. Layla, the girl he saved, had far fetched stories but when it came to information, she was one most spoke too. When she told him of some advisory meeting at Seattle PD, he smiled softly and petted her head. "Thanks little sister..." That evening, he hid in a car for a ride to the location of the meeting. The car pulled up as close to the doors as possible. and with hood over head, Tristan slipped up to the door.

Even with hood down, he was stared at. Tristan just put up a false smile and moved to a passing woman. "Can I help you, Ms.?" asked the female.

Tristan smirked and shook his head. "Well, first, I am not a Ms. And second, I am wondering where I can find Father......" Shit, what was his name? That was when the woman smiled and asked if he were there for the advisory meeting. Tristan simple replied, "Suuuure..."

After reserving directions, he would try to slip up towards the room it was held in. He hoped he would not be stopped before getting there. However, he would stop before the door and hesitate. Something did not smell quite right and caused him to rethink what he was about to do. However, the appearance of someone coming towards him, made him open the door and slip on in. His back was towards those within the room as he clung to the knob while closing the door. However, without looking back, he could tell there were at least three within the room. Hoping he got the right room, the vampire slowly turned around.

December 23th, 7:17 p.m. - At the side of the road- Jonah

Jonah was focused on the task at hand and groaned at the fact that he would have to get his hands dirty. During this process, he had momentarily let his guard down. Even if he had smelled someone coming, he would have not noticed right away. In any rate, Jonah gazed forward as tension in his back formed. He gulped as he subtly gripped the closest object big enough to use as a weapon. However, he smiled, holding a friendly facade. His head turned in the direction of the unfamiliar voice. "Uh, yes... But I have it."

December 23th, 7:19 p.m.  - Seattle PD - Domenic

It took Domenic a moment to realize that Tristan was a vampire but there was no mistaking the stillness that only came with death.  "Welcome," he said, and almost meant it.  He rose.  "I'm Father Domenic Sozio, federal marshal and vampire executioner.  This is Lillia and this is Cynara.  As you can no doubt tell, they are from the shifter community.  I assume Mr Salvatore sent you?"

"Think you need a tire iron for something other than changing a tire?"  The voice sounded amused.  "You're likely to get your clothes dirty.  Poor little Foxy, all covered in slush and grease and icky, icky dirt.  Really, you smell like you've never had a wrench in your hand in your life.  I'll change that tire for you... for fifty bucks."

December 23th, 7:19 p.m.  - Seattle PD - Tristan

Ooooh look at that, leaping before thinking.... It should be fine as long as you do not cause trouble. Tristan gulped and though he did not really have to breath, he inhaled deeply and reached to pull his left hand from the door knob. "A-Actually no..." He took another long, deep breath and slowly turned. He was obviously not good at planning things or social situations. His sapphire orbs went from face, to another. "I-I just wanted to speak to you..... And thought I could definitely get your attention by coming here... I can wait for the meeting to be over..."

December 23th, 7:17 p.m. - At the side of the road - Jonah

Jonah took another deep breath and then looked over what he brought out for changing a tire. He then used the back of his hand to rub his forehead. "I-I have a tire iron I just... I can manage. i remember how to change a tire."

December 23th, 7:19 p.m.  - Seattle PD - Brandy

"I assure you he's here of his own accord and not because Mr. Salvatore urged him to come," Brandy said as she stepped through the door Tristan had just finished closing.  She crossed the room, confidence and grace exuding from her pores. The red head sat down at the table, her green eyes scanning the room as she adjusted her designer blazer and crossed her legs to display a pair of shoes in the latest of Prada fashion.  She opened up the leather briefcase she had brought with her and pulled out a recorder as well as a note pad. "A pleasure to meet you as always Father," she purred as she uncapped the pen and gently rested it against rouged lips.

December 23th, 7:19 p.m.  - Seattle PD - Lillia

Lillia was always just a little jealous of those women, shifter or otherwise, whose mere presence made men notice.  The most people usually noticed about her was her oddness, so the sexy thing usually didnt work, and she wasnt even sure if she could pull it off.  She was very much girl next door, and not even quite that.  After all she was a classical music loving albino who would have been possibly one of the best violin players out there until she caught the wrong rats attention.  Now she was a classical music loving albino wererat who was studying nursing and still liked to play the violin when she had a chance.  Some things just dont change no matter how furry you get.

She had shook Cynara's hand with a pleasant smile.  She had seen the young woman before and was glad to finally get a chance to meet her.  She felt a little sorry for the vampire that had come in and was obviously quite uncomfortable.  She wondered what he wanted to talk to father Sozio about, but didnt ask, since that would be rude. Instead she offered Brandy a friendly smile.

December 23th, 7:19 p.m.  - Seattle PD - Brandy

Brandy subtly sniffed the air. 'Rat' was the conclusion she got from Lillia. She wasn't a fan of rats for obvious reasons when it came to her own. The faction had almost wiped out all that she called family. She really couldn't say Hi and I'm pleased to meet you. The woman would know it was a lie. Instead she went with the age old adage that if you cant say something nice don't say anything at all. Brandy smiled and gave a curt nod to the woman to acknowledge her smile and prove she wasn't interested in diving across the table and starting anything.

December 23th, 7:19 p.m.  - Seattle PD - Domenic

"It's nice to know that some of the vampires still have free will,"  Domenic said wryly.  "In any case, Sir, please take a seat and make yourself comfortable.  Are you Mr Salvatore's appointed representative, Miss MacCrae?  Or should we be expecting another vampire?"  He wasn't sure which side the wereleopard was on.  He knew she worked directly for Nigel Salvatore but her Nimir Raj was almost violently anti-vampire.

December 23th, 7:20 p.m.  - Seattle PD - Brandy

"Although it delights me that you think that Mr. Salvatore would consider me a capable representative, I have to disclose that I am here for personal reasons and not in any way, shape, or capacity, here representing Nigel.  I am but a show piece on his arm for events. It's my job to make him look good that is all. Perhaps he will send a representative then again he may not. Would you like for me to call his secretary and ask for you Father?" If nothing else the young leopardess's vocabulary had expanded to sound more professional over the pat few months of coaching.

Tristan gasped and backed form the door as it opened. In situation like that, it was either best to stand back or be well prepared. Since he was not prepared, he just stepped back and watched her before he gazed forward at the father. His comment about some vampires having free will was something that definitely applied to Tristan. He always felt he had a choice; even when being obedient to another for it was a choice after all. However, he did sit down while listening to the conversation.

December 23th, 7:21 p.m.  - Seattle PD - Tristan

The vampire was kind of curious on what was going to be discussed in the meeting. He never took apart of anything of great importance. Tristan pulled a hair tie from his pocket and pulled his long, dark hair into a ponytail. That did not do much to make him look more male; not even torn jeans and a blue hoody could do that. He licked his lips and took in a deep breath. "I hang out... a lot.... with those that some might consider forgotten. Some are very young and unfortunate.... Normally, I would not really care but... Well if you saw what went on..."

Tristan inhaled again. His eyes locked on each individual, one at a time. He stopped his gaze upon the father and he began to babel further. His nature seemed a bit innocent for someone that had lived as long as he had. "I suppose I could volunteer at a soup kitchen of maybe a some sort of charity but that does not stop..... other things that happen.... and I.... I hate it. I grow tired of it... I... I just want to protect them...." Pretty noble intention coming from someone that was often only for himself.

Jonah was about to go for the first bolt. He was even ready to turn. However, the finicky fox huffed and nearly stumbled over his words. That rarely happened to him. "I-I am not cheap just cautious... You can help me for fifty if you are still willing, "was all he said. However, he ha a feeling that it was probably to late. The fox began to work on the first bolt while thinking, How did he know I was a fox? He could have been a vampire or another lycan or maybe just someone whom knows.... But specific species.... Meh, he could have just been using flatter words in order to coax me into letting him fix my problem for fifty bucks. I have done it to suck in business.

Father Domenic nodded.  He couldn't help but recall a line from Scrooge, with Alister Sims.  They wish to interfere for good and have lost their power forever.  Fortunately, this vampire hadn't, at least not yet.  "There are always ways to help, my son," he said, feeling rather odd calling a vampire who could be over a century old 'my son'.  But hey, they called him 'father', so it was all good.  "There are charities that can help.  Often the people who need help the most don't have any idea where to go to get the help.  We can talk more after the meeting but I sure I'll be able to help, both you and your friends."

"The parking break is on..." replied Jonah. He still seemed slightly tense as if still cautious around the hyena. However, he gave an innocent smile and inquired naively as if trying to coax a conversation. "What makes you think I have a boyfriend?" It was an innocent question. "I must give the impression that I am gay."

Lillia found herself impressed by the vampires apparent caring attitude.  She knew all too well just how horrible life can be for those who aren't seen as part of the regular crowd.  The school for infected children had been drawing enough issue for her to be reminded how harsh things are.  She fiddled with the buttons on her sweater, thinking of all they had accomplished and all they still had to do.  She wondered if the other rodere was going to send a representative.  She was a little worried about that, actually.

Somehow, it had never occurred to him that he would still have Jules' smell on him. It was possible that he had come accustomed to the sent. A soft inhale pushed into his chest as he blushed. Not many could make him genuinely express anything as real. However, the comments seemed to cause it. The fox, whom tend to embrace more of his human side, moved back a little. He was beginning to feel like someone's pet. He should have not set himself up like that. Suddenly, the blush faded as quickly as it came. The charming young lycan smiled and then replied, "I suppose he does spoil me a little but I worked hard for most of what I have and would not have it any other way. I am not the kind to let someone shelter or pamper me by all means." The fox kept that smile and seemed to be quite calm

The hyena was silent for a long time, spinning the bolts with practiced ease.  He spun the tire so Jonah could see the hole large enough to stick a pencil in.  "You weren't following a snow plow, were you?  Probably ran over something he stirred up."  There was another long silence as he set the spare in place.  "You think maybe I could trade that fifty for a lift to the meeting?"

Snow plow. I did not see one. Would be hard to miss. What could I have ran over. Something tells me it will be a long night. "No, no snow plow..." was all that was said. Jonah was watching as if studying and he thought about how late he was. In fact, had he been doing it, it would take longer. In all actuality, he was quite grateful. In any case, when asked for a lift to the meeting, Jonah almost hesitated. He was not very trusting of people. However, he replied, "Sure. It is the least I could do."

December 23rd, 7:23 p.m.  - -  Seattle P.D.  - -  Shale

Shale arrived at the police station, entered through the side door they had all been told they could use tonight, mentioned the advisory meeting to the woman behind the desk then headed for the stairs and the room she was directed to.  As she approached the door she could make out voices behind it but could not make out the words that were being said.  She knocked twice before opening the door, just to warn those on the other side that another person was about to enter the room.  Entering the small conference room she noted those that were already there.  Her nose picked up the distinct scents of Rat and Cat as well as the stench of Vampire.  It was all she could do not to wrinkle her nose and gasp at the cloying smell of death.  Father Domenic was also there presumably in his role of Marshall and Executioner.  A smile spread across her face as she glided towards those already assembled.  "Father Domenic.  It's a pleasure to see you again.  My name is Shale and I am here on behalf of Seattle's Wolves."  Shale had no idea if any of the other wolves were going to show or not but she had been more then willing to attend the meeting when asked by Ryan and Tom.

Tristan sat up as Shale walked in. He knew that Lycan may not like him being there but started to not care. He still ha his own agenda  in mind. He was not initially there for the meeting in the first place. As the father welcomed her, Her laid his head back down. In spite not comfortable around even small groups of people, his own tension lowered. Tristan was not the least bit interested in bad blood or the politics of lycan and vampire. He had nothing to do withe any of it and did not even care to hear reasons for it. Though he even tend to hate his own kind, hatred was starting to grow tiresome.

Lillia waited quietly.  She had arrived early, so they had to wait for everyone else to get there.  In the meantime she did her best to keep to herself.  There was a lot of bad blood between the different groups of preternatural creatures in the city.  She let her gaze linger on the far wall, the fingers of her right hand moving of thier own accord as if they were upon the fret of her violin as she ran through a favorite piece of music in her mind.

Tristan sighed while waiting. His leg had to fidget while staring at the wall. After a bit, with hope that the whole lycan and vampire thing would not affect her, he got up and tried to move over by Lillia. He was bored and wanted someone to talk to. She seemed to be, more or less, an individual un-bogged by 'bad blood'. He preyed he was right. The vampire also hoped she would not be affected by a vampire 'smell'. Just something about her seemed like she could be friendly; so he sat down, slowly, and softly spoke. "Hi...."

Suki entered the room looking exhausted. Between the training to try and deal with her mystical issues and trying to keep order with the preternaturals in the city as well as being on the hunt for a serial snuff film artist, as well as the serial skinner with very little leads to anything, life was not giving her much time to relax.

She offered the room a tired smile. "Good evening everyone." She replied as she settled into her chair. "My apologies for not being here sooner."

She settled in and turned to Domenic "Are we expecting many more? The room looks a bit sparse tonight."

Indeed it was ironic but Tristan was different too and not because he was a vampire amongst a bunch of Lycan. He was different form his own kind and a sort of stray. There was a soft knock on the door to the meeting room and Katherine stuck her head in. Offered a nervous smile and found a chair beside the pale woman. She didn't move with the same grace as the other shifters in the room. In fact she moved more similarly to the humans. However the shifters in the room could smell she had the scent of an animal on her. Mind you it was unlike anything any of them had smelt with the exception of Cynara.

Katherine offered Cynara a smile and a wave wondering if the attractive red head would remember her. The pale albino woman beside her drew her attention however she couldn't help be watch her. The way she smelt was pleasant and exciting for some odd reason however.

The rather plain brunette sighed and grabbed a pad and uncapped it and began doodling. With luck maybe someone would have some news for her. If not it was good to keep safe and get an update from the police about the whos who of whos being hunted in Seattle.

Domenic looked at the clock.  "Well, this meeting is scheduled to start right about now but I'm going to give everyone a few extra minutes before I really get started.  Let me begin by welcoming you all.  This is an open meeting and I realize that not all the preternatural groups in the city get along with each other.  I'd like to thank you for making the effort to be here and for trying to keep your differences off this evening's agenda.  For those of you who don't know me, my name is Domenic Sozio.  I am a catholic priest as you can see but I also wear a number of other hats.  I am the vampire executioner for a three state area, covering Washington, Oregon and Idaho.  This also grants me an additional hat, in that I am a federal marshal.  I have a degree in preternatural biology, all of which combines to earn me yet another hat.  I've been appointed to head the combined Seattle Preternatural Crimes Advisory Board, which is hopefully what we will be forming tonight.  I'm going to urge all of you to participate or to urge your leaders to participate.  None of the preternatural groups have ever had a voice with the police before.  For good reason they've chosen to avoid the police.  Now we are provided with the chance to make their concerns heard.  You can speak up without fear and we will listen.  I can't guarantee what is said here will change things overnight but change will begin but it has to start somewhere.  I think the best place to start is by introducing yourselves, not just to me but to each other.  Share as much as you are comfortable with.  The rest of the room may be able to tell by sense of smell which group you belong to but I can't so I'd like for you to take pity on my feeble nose and let me in on the secret.  Whatever else you share is up to you but at the very least I'd like name and phenotype."

December 23rd, 7:29 p.m.  - -  Seattle P.D.  - - Tristan

It took a great deal of guts but Tristan chose to go first. The vampire huffed and then pushed aside his drawing. It was unfinished but it was a pretty detailed image of the room from his view point. It included those he could see from where he was sitting. and ended with the last one that walked in It was her and Father Domenic that were not complete plus shading on other objects and a blank spot where a wall should be. He did not exactly follow any form of training and certainly flowed with the design rather then sticking to structure.

In spite the fact that he wore clothing looking somewhat male, the vampire looked VERY female in features. At first glance, he even seemed delicate. However, his brilliant, sapphire eyes expressed a very different story. He began to study each individual. The hoody wearing vampire spoke, surprisingly, in a soft volume. "I guess I shall start..... I am Tristan Crow. I am a vampire and I suddenly felt like I am at one of those.... whatcha-call-it.... The mortal thing..... Oh, A-A meeting..." He glanced downward as he cleared his throat. His right hand rubbed the back of his head. "Look, all I want to do is help. By help, I mean those that..." He groaned a little and moved to sit back down. "N-nevermind..."

Daniel made sure he had a pad of paper and a pen ready to go before Father Dominic asked those present to introduce themselves.  He was able to fill in a couple of names immediately, remembering them from the meeting at Archangel Towers back in September.  The others he would fill in as they made their introductions.  First one to do the honors was a pale individual that could of been either male or female, it was difficult to tell even when the person started to talk.  But once they said their name Daniel decided that the person was male, and a vampire on top of that.  This person didn't mention being in attendance at the behest of another vampire so it was most likely that he was trying to stay independent.  A very risky thing to do.

Cynara had reached for a note pad and pen when they were layed upon the table, and then when Katherine came in and nodded to her, she got up and moved to sit near the woman. She had watched her walk in the room, and wasn't sure if the woman had remembered her from their previous meeting, or if she would recognize her with her new shorter brunette hair style. When it was obvious that she did infact remember her, Cynara had moved to sit with her because Morvan or any of the other usual pard members weren't around and there was no way in hell she was going to go sit next to Brandy.
Cynara didn't hate Brandy. They had gotten past that very quickly after meeting. But there weren't the best of friends by any stretch of the imagination. They were Pard, but Brandy chose to go directly against their Nimir-Raj, and with her unwavering loyalty to him, and the rest of the pard, there was some animosity towards the red headed woman across the table. Not that they would ever address it in public. Pard business was Pard buisiness.
Cynara had whispered a quick hello to Katherine when she sat down, but then Father dominic had started talking and Cynara went into business mode, listening to every word he said, poised to take important notes.

The scent had been getting stronger for the past few blocks but its meaning was lost on Seren.  She'd never encountered territorial markers before.  To her they were just places were somebody had been too lazy to find an indoor bathroom.  Heedless of the danger she continued.  Her directions, given to her by someone with little knowledge of Seattle's lycanthropic politics, would have sufficed for anyone who didn't fall into the category of newcomer or shapeshifter.  Seren fell into both however and that was where the directions she had been given might have placed her life in danger, if she had happened upon the turf of a a different Rodere.

"Hey I think you're lost!" called out a voice.

"Shut up spaz.  Can't you see that she's blind?"

Yes, my mother and I just moved to Seattle a few weeks ago, Seren said as she listened to the first speaker, finally having a name to go with the timber of the voice she heard. Its a pleasure to meet you Don, and you as well Mike.

Oh, she said sounding a tad dejected when the man spoke about being a part of his Rodere, if Id known I would have found another way, but Im not a part of any Pard.

Mike is it? she asked turning her head in the direction of the other voice, reaching up to pull her dark glasses off. She wore them when out because it seemed to disturb other people to see the cloudy irises of her eyes. I can guarantee you that I am indeed blind and the cane isnt a fashion statement.

She turned back to Don, Thank you, and I dont hold it against him, even not knowing the political clime, I cant blame him for his concerns. But if it would make you feel better then yes call your King, she said with a sigh her fingers tapping against her cane waiting for the two men to stop bickering.

Trust is somewhat hard to come by.  Of course we are open to any suggestions that can help in the cause though.  Its one of the reasons why I am here.  We were hoping there would be an opportunity to reach out to others and make them aware without a doubt that the Rats are good for more than just hiding in the sewers."

Seren listened to the banter between the two friends, turning her head towards Don. She lifted her hand and felt the air until she hit his arm. She wrapped slender fingers around the limb, "No it wasn't overly important," she said.

With a small smile she spoke to Mike, "Well I guess I'll be seeing you around; or not." It was one of those turns of phrases she liked to use when she ran into people who questioned whither or not she was blind or were general assholes about it. She didn't think the other man was an ass, more like the filter between his brain and mouth didn't work all the time.

"While guiding me, please let me know about anything that would have to cause me to step up or down," she said quietly; most guides seemed to forget that thus causing more injury to the blind person than the person being guided would normal cause to themselves.

There was a strange energy running through him, an energy that Seren found at the same time comforting and yet uncomfortable.  It was like someone was caressing her but stroking the wrong direction.  The Beast inside her reacted, not quite a full fight or flight reaction but it seemed almost to be searching for something.  It settled after a moment into something akin to the pacing of a caged animal that could see and smell freedom.

Don cleared his throat and it wasn't difficult for someone with Seren's blindness enhanced senses, let alone her lycanthropically enhanced senses, to realize that he was uncomfortable with the question.  "It was before my time," he said finally.  "The wolves outnumber all the other shapeshifters put together, so when one of the old Rat Kings proposed an alliance and a mutual aid arrangement, the leopards jumped at the idea.  Problem is they walked into a trap and the rats slaughtered more than half of them.  They never really recovered.  When Nick took over, he extended the olive branch.  As you can imagine, it wasn't exactly received with open arms.  Their new Raj is a scrappy little bastard but he's new to the area as well, so he's taking things slow and relying heavily on the old guard to advise him as to what is going on with the politics.  They aren't willing to trust the rats, even with a new King.  Hopefully bringing you to them will help convince them that we're legit about wanting peace."

Her nose twitched as she scented his unease with the topic.

"Oh, I guess I can understand that one, they got burned once and now any time that they have dealings with the rats they think they'll be burned again. It's like the old saying 'Fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me'," she said with a tilt of her head.

"Though if the Raj is new to the area, but holding on to members of the old regime it's like having the old raj still in power. He's making his decisions based on a biased point of view; it's not going to benefit the Leopards in the long run. As to how this will be viewed, you bringing me to them does have a chance of aiding Nick in his quest to bring 'peace' between the two groups, but it also has the chance of backfiring on him as well, it the old advisers are part of this meeting you're taking me to."

Don chuckled.  "Wait until you meet him,"  he said.  "Saying that the old guard advises him is making the assumption that he listens to them.  He does what he wants. From what I heard, he'd been in town for less than a week and he was scrapping it up with the wolves on their own turf.  Literally, some real estate that the wolves have set aside as their own party park.  The leopards used to be in bed with the vampires as donors, just so they could have some strong allies but Morvan is seriously anti-fang.  He's stopped that cold."

"Hang on.  We aren't going to make this light," don said, stopping at a corner.  "All Alphas share certain traits.  That is what makes them Alphas and not peons like the rest of us.  They're all confident and sure of themselves.  Nick, my King, is probably one of the most reasonable pack Alphas you'll ever meet.  He takes everyone's opinion into consideration before he makes a decision.  It doesn't mean he lets them make the decisions for him but he certainly listens before he decides.  Okay we're good to go.  Whoa!  Hey asshole!  Pedestrians have the right of way!  Let's go."  Don led Seren past the honking car and, although she couldn't see it, he was giving the driver the finger.

The pride that Seren had heard in Don's voice was back again.  There was just something in the way he spoke about the Rat King that led his Rodere.  There was fierce loyalty and love and something else as well.  The way he spoke the king's name made it clear that Nick wasn't just his leader, he was Don's friend.

"Wait until you meet the local leopards,"  Don said.  "They've got one of the subbiest subs I've ever seen.  Leslie, I think her name is.  She's cute too.  Plays for the wrong team though.  When Morvan took over he didn't kill the old Raj.  That's what usually happens with some of the breeds.  It's most common among the wolves and the rats.  Scared the hell out of me when Nick stepped up, because there I was standing right beside him, with Mike on the other side.  If the old King had won, we'd have been dog meat too and the rats would still be killing anyone who wandered into their turf, just for sport.  Nick is trying to change things.  Bring us out of the shadows and out of the sewers.  making peace with the other breeds.  It's an uphill climb though.  There is still one rat faction that is holding out.  They are a little smaller than us but from what I've seen, their Queen is a hard core bitch from Hell.  Nick is trying to get them to talk but I think he's going to have to fight."

They turned twice, once to the left and a few blocks later they turned to the right.  The street noises were getting less commercial sounding and more professional.

History is rife with stories deposed leaders rising up time and again to reclaim their position, the Jacobite Rebellions being just one example.

Seren hesitated for a moment, drawing in a deep breath, forcing her mind and Beast to calm down. She was getting ready to go into a room with other Lycanthropes, some of whom were Leopard like her, others were rat and wolf.

She finally stepped out to the elevator car, cane sweeping from side to side letting her navigate over the raised edge of the car without catching the toe of her shoe on the minute gap.

Once out to the car she stopped and waited for Don, "Which way?" She would let him lead her the rest of the way.

"This way, I think," Don said.  "No, the other way.  Sorry."  After a moment of confusion, he stopped and placed Seren's hand on a door knob.  "Do you want me to come in with you?" he asked.

She smiled as Don got turned around and then delivered her to the door of the conference room. "If you wouldn't mind," she said in response to his question, as she turned the knob and pushed the door open.

"There's a spot," Ian called out, pointing to where a pick-up truck was pulling away from a parking meter.  "He's probably left us a little time on it and hey, if they give you a ticket, you can always get them to fix it, right?  I mean, we are here to help the cops, right?"

"Sure," Don said, reaching for the door knob.  "Sorry we're late,"  he announced, stepping inside.  He recognized some of the people at the table, which was a good thing.  He wasn't going to be dealing with a room full of strangers.  "S'up?  I'm Don, from one of the rat packs and this young lady is Seren.  She's new in town.  She's a wereleopard and needs to make contact.  Do you think maybe one of you could help out with that?"

Jonah pulled in and parked the car. He did not care all that much about the time limit. However, there is a part of him that would rather not get a ticket. But, he was in a hurry. Jonah did not keep from straightening up his clothing, however. He was clearly a man whom placed some importance on his own appearance. Though he did try not to hold the same standards on others. He was willing to offer Ian a clean shirt but he was not sure Ian would accept. In any case, he got out of the car and when Ian was out, he locked the doors and started for the building. "Well, shall we be going in?"

December 23th, 7:40 p.m. - Police Department  - Jonah and Tristan

"I am sure we at least ask to be directed since I do not venture into this place often." He had an idea where to go but he was playing it a little coy out of politeness. He walked into the police department and addressed a receptionist on directions to the conference room. After she was done speaking, he glanced over his shoulder, at Ian and then raised his right hand to gesture for the hyena to follow. The fox seemed to flow with every movement as they made their way to the elevator leading up to the selected floor. He was not in the frame of mind of conversation so he remained in his silence. As they came off the elevator, he began to move towards a room in which two others had entered.

"I believe this is it," he said without even bothering to see if Ian was listening. He had reached for the knob shortly after the first two had already gone in. He seemed to wait a couple of seconds before taking a deep breath and putting on that charming and welcoming smile he used when dealing in networking and business. It was all in the act of progress. His performance was to welcome all and hold a neutral front. When ready, he walked in. His first approach was to move around anyone that might be in the way without being rude about it; and then move towards where Domenic stood. He continued to smile as he said, so all could here, "So terribly sorry I am late."

Meanwhile, Tristan had been sitting rather impatiently as he removed his first complete drawing and began a new one. He paused when two lycan opened the door to enter. The vampire gazed up and let out a heavy sigh. It was not because he hated lycan; it was because he knew they did not like his kind and he was starting to wish he did not show up at the meeting. He sort of felt cornered. When the third Lycan wondered into the room, he even began to loose focus on his work. His eyes began to search everyone in the room for something that seemed generally welcoming and friendly. Tristn sighed again as he tried to go back to work on his second drawing.

December 23th, 7:41 p.m. - Police Department - Don

Don grinned at Lillia.  It was good to see a familiar face.  He winked at Cynara and was pleased to see that there were seats between the two women.  "I've got a good seat for you," he said to Seren.  "Just around the corner of the table, pasted this chair and-" Don put Seren's hand on the back of a chair "-here's you spot.  I'll be on your left.  The rather charming young lady on your right is Cynara.  She's like you."

Seren could feel the Beast inside of her reacting, eager, excited.  It made it difficult to think, difficult to remember that she was human as well as leopard and not just leopard.

Across the room, Ian was looking at the others assembled around the table.  "You've got to be kidding me," he said.  "A white albino lab rat and a blind leopard?  What's next?"

"What's next is you take a seat and introduce yourself,"  Domenic said.  "You as well, please Jonah.  My name is Domenic Sozio.  I'm chairing this meeting, which has only just gotten past the introduction phase.  We're currently discussing the possibility of a school for children infected with lycanthropy.  Any thoughts or ideas?"

Jonah hid the need to chuckle when he heard Ian rudely comment on two of the Lycan. He stifled it do to knowing that it might insult someone. He cleared his throat and continued to hold that lovely, full-lipped, smile as he scanned over all of those that showed up. He was kind of shocked to see a vampire but paid little attention to that factor. After a quick dusting off his vest. "I known as Jonah Revanos; your local jack of all triads and net-worker by profession." He smiled, cleared his throat again and gazed over at the Padre. "Oh, and splendid idea. A school should do wonders. If at all possible, even special courses to help teach self control." Educating others was a beautiful thing; in that lycan's eyes. His reaction was in complete honesty.

Lillia smiled at Don, somewhat surprised at him being there, but glad none the less.  As he moved to sit next to her, her beast reached out and brushed against his in welcome.  Of course, the insult was not unnoticed.  She chose to take it as an unfortunate case of lack of filter between mind and mouth.  The skin around her eyes tightened, and her hand twitched in response, but she was a lady after all, and would not make a fuss over such a small thing.

Seren sat in the chair Don had directed her to, her beast was roiling about trying to get out, and it was making the normally calm young woman edgy. She wanted to find a nice quite dark corner to hide in before she made a major scene.

Unseeing eyes turned towards the man who'd spoken so harshly about her and another. With a shaking hand she reached up and slipped her sunglasses off. "Yes I am blind, yes I am a leopard, neither by my own choice. One a defect from birth the other the incompetency of a lab tech; I'm sorry that you find my presence here so offensive that you feel you must make an ass of yourself."

Once done speaking she turned in the direction of the man who'd spoken chastising the other as well, "It's a pleasure to meet you," she said before slipping the dark glasses back on and folding her hands in her lap, one finger tapping out the opening words to Don't Cry For Me Argentina

Cynara had grinned over at Don when he winked at her, and was happy that he moved to sit near her, bringing along the leopard he had mentioned was trying to make contact with the Pard. They sat down beside her and she was amazed at the roll of the girls beast that radiated off her. Cynara had only felt something like that from those who were new, or who had little control over their beast. Without thinking anything of it, she reached over and set her hand on the blind womans, willing her own beast to help soothe the one inside Seren that seemed so aggitated.

Seren jumped in her seat, startled at the touch of another. She felt the brush of fur against her skin and the scent of leopard reached her noses. At the touch she felt her beast start to settle, giving a timid little chirrup at the others'.

Her natural inclination was to pull away from the hand laying on top of hers', so used to the discomfort she'd sense with her parents and brother. She dropped her head down as if she were ashamed of how she'd reacted to both Ian's comment  and the touch of Cynara.

Jonah watched the group as it would seem that they would loose focus. He was curious on how Domenic would even handle a group lacking structure. Jonah took a seat close to the front but kept his smile. He said to the group, "I believe we were discussing education options." Meanwhile, the vampire of the group was growing uneasy. However, he noticed that a couple of them seemed to fuss over Seren. This made him curious. He could tell she was blind but he did not see her as handicapped. However, he watched her in wonderment on what made her so tense. However, he moved away from the albino he had sat by and selected a seat a little more to himself. He sort of felt on his own so he let it be as such. When the topic was re-brought up, his eyes shifted from the lycan stopped on the Father.

"There are a number of hurdles that need to be overcome before you can open an official school,"  Domenic said.  "The curriculum has to be approved and staff have to be screened.  Given the nature of the school you are proposing, several of the roadblocks are irrelevant, which means they need to be addressed for removal, rather than needing to be overcome, which will be an issue of its own."  he sighed.  "Helping people is never easy.  The system assumes that you're up to something and tries to figure out what that is.  That is why official sanction is so difficult."

"Unofficial schools exist all over the place,"  Ian said.  "Private schools, schools with religious aims, all sorts of shit like that.  We don't need a sanction to teach kids to read.  People home school all the time.  How is this any different?"

Daniel stood.  "I'll try to answer that question if you don't mind Father Sozio.  First of all my name is Daniel Lafeat of the Seattle Police Department's Preternatural Unit."  He turned to look at the lycan that had asked the latest question.  "As to how opening a school for lycan is different then other schools the answer is both simple and complex at the same time.  Most non-lycan's or vampire's see lycans as a kind of threat.  One or two in any one place at any one time is not bad but any More then that and people start to get worried.  In large groups, like there would be at a school, makes most humans down right paranoid.  Even if most of the lycans in that group are children.  I"m not saying that the paranoia is warranted, I'm just saying that it is there."  Daniel looked at Father Sozio and Suki.  "Do either of you have anything to add on the subject?" he asked with a slight smile.

The werehyena looked at the cop.  "We assemble in groups all the time and nobody says shit," he said.  "The wolves especially.  They have a fucking game preserve south of the city.  A school is certainly going to be less of an issue than a place where you know they're getting on all fours to kill with teeth and claws."  The shapeshifters and vampires in the room could detect the subtle growl that accompanied those last few words.  Clearly killing with tooth and claw was something that excited him.

A small shudder went through him as he pushed past the thought of hunting.  "It's been a while but I used to teach at a mission in Africa.  I don't have a formal degree but that doesn't mean I don't know basic math and other shit.  I'd certainly be willing to help out, in exchange for a meal and a place to keep the rain and snow off every now and then."

"Funding is only one part of the problem, those skilled enough to teach are another.  Believe me, we would love to see the kind of unity that would come with understanding, but that is a hard path to travel, as most of us have seen, some more than others.  I'm very glad to hear the willingness to help in this effort, and I know Nick will too.  We need to do this the right way, so people can see us as civilized beings, and not blood sucking leeches and flesh mauling beasts."  Lillia said with a nod to the pretty vampire.  "That means cutting through the red tape, making sure that we abide by laws and regulations.  Thats why we don't want to just gather kids together and teach them.  Thats important too, of course, but this is also about something bigger.  You don't have to be human to be humane."

December 23rd, 7:50 p.m.  - -  Seattle Police Department - Tristan and Jonah

As Jonah sighed and took notes on the conversation and the direction it went, he thought about what it was that he should say. There was a point that the argument should end and he knew he should be the one that ended it but he was curious on what would be said in retort of Ian's comment. He had a job to do but could not help but study the individuals in the room. The lycan felt he could serve a better purpose by being quiet, observing and figure out what those that had come are about. As for his offer to fund, he merely said he would front funding. He knew that there was more to do that just that but he figured letting them discuss it would aid in him figuring them out. Though, the difficulty lied in those that would remain silent rather then speak up. They were either reserved or shy. This mean that he would have to take his time to speak with them one on one. So far, at couple of them seemed to have very strong views on the manner and the Hyena was starting to seem dangerous on his manners alone. Jonah noted ever detail of the meeting and how it went on.

Meanwhile, the vampire known as Tristan, had been sitting there drawing and then using one of the free sheets to fold origami birds. The first one he worked on was being folded while comments were made on the subject of school. He listened but he did not say anything until someone addressed an issue of knowing his name. "That is because I said it earlier. It is not my fault you and red were late and did not hear it." Those cold baby blues locked onto the Hyena. He bit his lip and dropped the first complete bird onto the table. He glanced at the priest and then back at the  back at Ian while wondering how aggressive he was.

"Anything being done about the murder of Ben Stillwell?" the werehyena asked.  It wasn't a casual question and even the humans in the room knew that.

"How about I have your word that you'll catch the bastard instead?"

"First off," began Tristan stand up, "I agree with him. Something needs to be done and someone like that needs to be caught." He gestured towards Ian and then glanced over at the Father. "Secondly, I think I have heard enough. I do not get why a Lycan or vamp could not be one of the po. We have criminals of all breeds. But I guess there will not be an answer and had the victim been human...." He sighed heavily and then began to walk towards the door. "I will find you later, Padre..."

Meanwhile, Jonah gave a soft sigh and a faint smile. "I am sure there is a perfectly good explanation on why things are the way they are." He had an idea but he was not going to force anyone into a discussion. Jonah looked to Ian and added, "I am sure all that can be done will be. If we, as a society of our own, learn to work with the Police Department, we can solve this issue and many others. The murder will be brought to justice."

December 23rd, 7:56 p.m.  - -  Seattle Police Department - Father Domenic Sozio

Domenic sighed.  His discomfort filled the room.  Even the humans could pick up on it.  "Ian, I can't say for certain that Ben's killer will be caught.  From the look of it, we may be dealing with a preternatural serial killer.  Serial killers rarely hunt outside their sex or their racial stereotype although there are exceptions.  Jeffrey Dahmer, for example, hunted blacks and asians, even though he was white.  For someone to hunt shapeshifters, they would have to also be preternatural.  As far as we can tell, these killings have been happening on or around the full moon.  That suggests a preternatural link although it's unlikely to be a shapeshifter.  The killing is too precise for that close to the full moon.  That means vampire or one of the many variations of witch.  If we can determine what time the killings took place we'll be able to potentially eliminate the vampires.  So, as much as it looks like we've got nothing to go on, we've got a great deal of information.  I'm sure you all realize that leaking any of this to the press will make the case that much harder to solve?"
