Flaws & Merritt are an optional part of this game. It can however be used to enhance your RPed character to give them more depth and flavor.
No character can have anymore than 7 points worth merits but if they have 7 points they must also have 7 points worth of flaws.
Whatever total number of merits you have be it 7 or less you MUST have the same number total in flaws.
However if you just want to add a darker spin on things it is feasible to have a character that solely has flaws and no merits.
